Sold the 51, back with a 64 Barracuda!

Discussion in 'New to the H.A.M.B.? Introduce yourself here!' started by fadingfastsd, Jan 6, 2009.

  1. Hey guys,

Got to talk with alot of you when I was wrapped up in my 51 Plymouth Concord project. Anybody who followed my build thread saw I eventually blew up the new 218 flathead I swapped in, and I was struggling with it.

I finally sold the 51 to a real nice guy up in Temecula, as I was just burned out on it and didn't want to go through another engine swap, either small block or another flathead. He's gonna be building a cool straight axle drag car out of her, so it looks like it's going to a good home.

Anyways, I picked up a 64 Plymouth Barracuda here in SD. Overall it's a real nice car, original gold/silver (?) paint that the PO put a coat of flat black on the top (hemi under glass theme I guess). It was an original slant 6 car, but the guy swapped in a 273 w/ 2 bbl. Has a 4 speed and a Hurst shifter. Interior is good, and it's pretty much a daily driver. I'll be cleaning it up and modifying some stuff, but I plan on driving the shit out of it.

I know its not as HAMB friendly as the ol 51 was, but I've always been a fan of Cudas, and this girl will get me by for awhile.

Here's some pics...what do you guys think!

Looks like a very solid Cuda, some different tires and drop the front and it will look real killer
    maybe some mopar steelies

  5. Thanks buddy.

Yep it needs new wheels/tires right away. I'm not sure what kind of rims to look for though.

Not much around in the 5 on 4" pattern these days, unless you happen upon some neat old wheels. American Racing was offering the Ansen Slot repros in 5 on 4" when they came out a few years ago, not sure if they still do.

    Nice ride!!

  7. Thanks Ed.
Ya I'm looking around for rims right now.
It looks like I've got that 5 bolts 4" pattern on my original 13" rims.
I'm trying to find something in the same pattern but a 15" rim, but not having much luck so far.

  9. Thanks Ed.

Any idea whats the largest tire size I can fit on 15" rims on this car?

Wheelwells are pretty tight on those. From my experience with a 65 Valiant Signet, I would guess 215/60/15 would be about it on the front, maybe a bit larger on the rear, maybe not. Obviously it will depend on the ride height, and whatever the offset is on the rims you choose. I think those Ansens have about 4" backspacing, which isn't too bad. 4-1/2" would tuck under even better I think. On the Valiant I had 15 x 6" that had about 3" backspacing, with 195/60/15 and 205/60/15 ... but it was pretty low, torsion bars turned down, and saggy leafs with 1" blocks. :p

Welcome! I think the Cuda is very Kool!

Some people with PT Cruisers have bolted on 4" bolt pattern wheels on their cars. The difference between the spacing is minimal. Maybe some front wheel drive wheels would work. 80's LeBarons and Shadows had 15" wheels. I know the offset might be a problem.

  12. Ok it's been awhile, figured I should update everybody on the Cuda.
You can follow my full thread here:

    at For A Bodies Only.

But as far as the important stuff is concerned:

New exhaust (2 1/4" pipe w/ Flowmaster 40s dumped at the axle:

Next, got some new tires & rims:

    14x7rear & 14x6 slotted mags w/ some new tires.

    And finally, the engine.
Swapped out the old 273 with a bad rod knock for a mean 318.
    318 w/ a real lumpy cam, Edelbrock SP2P-318 aluminum intake, Holley 4bbl.
Engine swap was done by Paul Wagner of Team-Dart (Bullrun TV show season 2, www.team-dart.com).

Heres a video of how it sounds with the new engine:

A couple pics of the new engine:

New interior setup with tach & some gauges. Move radio to dash since it was already hacked up:

Also, rebuilt the whole front end...all new bushings, ball joints, tie rods, shocks. Put a set of air shocks on the rear, lifted it about 2" to clear the tires.

I'll try and keep this updated from now on too!
