The lnengineering site is dated...a large percentage from '05 or earlier. A lot has changed in the last two years. Interestingly, according to that charge, the CJ-4 Rotella still has a reasonable amount of Zn... I don't sweat it too much - spring pressures on a flathead are pretty mild compared to virtually any overhead engine.
I'd like to know what the levels of ZDDP are in CJ-4 Delo. I have several gallons of CI-4 Delo that I bought up for my rebuilt Y-block, but I don't have much left.
Rotella 15w 40 CJ4 is good enough for me. But, this has all all been a shell game(sorry about the pun) to cover for the fact that cheap offshore made lifters with poor finish made it into the supply chain. The cam companies are blaming the oil,*********. The 1940's- 1960s oil had the same amount of zinc as oil does now. Its the lifters. If it was the oil all 16 would fail at once. I studied a set under a microscope compared to a set with 100,000 miles on them and I would have reused the old ones. The Shell rep told me that they have 1200 ppm zn and 1000 of P in the CJ 4 rated oil. and friends in trucking are seeing higher levels than that. My brother in law broke in a new cam and still flattened a lobe with two bottles of the old EOS and a fill of the old Kendall (Brad Penn). Do what you want, but oil is not the problem it is inspecting the lifters. When he pulled it all out, that lifter was different than the rest. He doesn't know how he overlooked it, but it was actually oblong with a micrometer. Johnson Lifters, as far as I know, are the only ones still made to factory OEM specs in the USA. Other brands are outsourced from anywhere and you get what you get. The cam companies can blow smoke up your**** all day about oil, but its their garbage lifters that caused this whole stampede to having to use solid zinc grease for motor oil. The thing is, cams are still going to fail regardless, at break in or 5000 miles later because the lifters dont change form, they will be garbage. You can run GL spec gear oil and they will still fail if you have a lifter that is poorly made. I have yet to see any engine flatten 16 lobes, so what logic would you use to say its the oil?
If you go there they have Brad Penn advertisements everywhere, isn't that funny? And that Rotella 2007 CJ4 number, thats a missprint or something. VOA and UOA at Blackstone labs puts their average at just at 1200 ppm zn and 1000 ppm p with 35 ppm of Boron. Friends of mine are seeing more than that in theirs. And some of them are using Fleetguard Monitor for testing and coming up with the same numbers. It is not the oil. It is*****py manufacturing of hard parts.
I use Valvoline Racing Oil 20-50 in my '51 flathead, says "High Zinc" right on the lable. Available in every parts store on the planet! Use STP "blue" to top-off when oil level drops. Says "High ZDDP" on the lable. Change oil every 2-3,000 miles. Just my $.02
Funny story, I pulled the valve cover on an old 6 in a pickup and when it came off it was like pulling a jello mold. There was this oily jello looking stuff encasing the entire valve train. The old fellow that owned the truck said he added a can of STP every oil change since the the truck was new. Other people have reported the same phenomenon.
Im still using Rotella too. In both my blown SBC and my Flatty Just pulled my main caps off the Flatty the other nite they look great and plastigauged at .002 I also ran a magnet thru the used oil and pan and got very little debris from the non filtered flatty Im happy with it.
IF I were ever to use a full bottle of STP in an engine, I'd make damn sure the engine was hot and running when I added it... I mostly use it in early Ford steering boxes!
Amsoil/Rotella are both excellent. but I would add some zinc additive to it with every oil change just to be sure. Every engine builder I ever talked too said thats what you need for flat tappet engines. Michael
just went through the same process. I bought the Brad Penn "green oil" locally for $44 a case. It is high in ZDDP and highly recommended. Call them and find your nearest dealer. 814-368-1340.
I don't know the specifics of GM EOS being discontinued, but I ordered some from Summit last week and they shipped it Friday. I should have it tomorrow. Maybe it is just depleting existing inventory for them. It has went up in price a whole lot though. The bottle I bought was 16 dollars. It used to be 6 dollars.
Torco Oil with MPZ Molebdenum,Phosphrus and Zinc. You can look them up on the internet. They also have an additive that will add the necessary MPZ to protect your valve train to any oil you choose to use.
