Along with today's tires, there would be a lighter car with a tube frame and a Lenco. But that wouldn't really be a street roadster, would it?
Eric Rickman photo of the Schifano interior. Greg's emblem is on the lower part of the door panel. This shot is an out take from the 62 HRM story. The only part of this that didn't go to England with the car is the floor carpet. We removed that when racing, and I was not able to locate it when Bruce hauled the car off in 86.
Dean, in some ways it seems like it was yesterday but it was close enough to 50 years ago not to quibble. Wayno
I know what you mean. A lot of this seems like yesterday, then I see that old stranger looking back in the mirror and realize how long it's really been. Here's a couple more from even further back. The one without the hood and hubcaps is December 1960, the first day the roadster was on the road as a real hot rod. I was out of school for the holidays, and we thrashed on it for about eight 16 hour days in a row. Drove it home from the shop about 2 AM with a grin that took two weeks to leave. The engine in that pic is the first sbc. A 1/8th over 265 with an Edlebrock intake with 3 Strombergs, and a Webber cam. The second pic is about two weeks later. Still no interior. That was a few months off.
This is Tommy Outlaw's blue RPU. AGAIN, this is Dean Lowe's thread, his bitchin' pickup, just thought this one was real cool too, and this is a thread that has an old RnC feature about it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2976725&posted=1#post2976725
Dean you are the real thing. Theres no doubt that the HAMB will be even better with you posting here. Thank you so much for sharing your pictures and stories. I could sit here and read them all day long.
Got to say, Awesome. The best part of reading R&C lately has been the 'historical' articles. This thread beats them hands down because when I'm done reading, I could probably PM the guy AND get a response! Thanks for being here. Love that RPU.
dean, ever think about firing up the torch? i bet we could find you another rpu, would like to see that! thanks for sharing!
That cover is one of the classics from Hotrod. It is the epitome of rodding at the time. Thanks for coming on board and sharing your history.
Nope, wouldn't do it as long as the original still exsists. In the last few years I have begun to realize, from conversations I've had with guys who remember it, that car had become somewhat of an icon. More people than I ever realized remember seeing the car run. I have nothing against clones, if the original is long gone. But, in this case, if the new owner does it justice, I think doing a clone would take away from the original. I wish it was still in the US, but at least it looks like it's got a good home. Now, if the ooportunity ever came along to get it back........................
Me too I'm not on here enough in the summer I guess. I can't figure out how there would be a better thread than this. I remember the car from Riverside, a few years later I was racing there with my 55 Chev.
I missed this thread originally, but would like to say thank you for posting it. I own an RPU and loved reading about the history from this one. Bitchin little truck. Chris
Hey Dean, Thanks for posting this thread about your car. I was especially pleased to see a picture of Hugh Osterman seated in your car on the first page. I am from Pasadena and I own Grassman/Nicholson/Osterman 61 Corvette that used to run B/SP. Osterman won the 62 Winternats with it. I saw Putzel quite a bit in the late 80s, early 90s when I had just finished restoring the car after driving the hell out of it. I just wanted to tell you that he always spoke fondly of your car. Best regards
