Falcon neutral safety switches are on the top side of the lower end of the steering column, and often require that you put pressure upward on the shift lever to get them to work. it's simply due to constant movement and vibration that they get out of whack. they're only on cars with automatic trans, and there are two versions of them, one with backup light contacts and one without. manual trans cars used a different backup light switch that worked off the linkage. you may have a worn out detent plate in the shift collar, or the more common problem of the shifter socket being worn out. the collars are available from several vendors, unpainted, and are not that hard to replace. Ford made an engineering change in '64 that moved the fusebox to the driver's side kick panel, and slightly easier to access.
if your car has rust damage in the cowl (a common problem); there may have been water leakage that unfortunately drops almost directly on the headlight switch/fuse block; i have run across this on several Falcons and Mustangs over the years.

Falconewbie, Glad to see your got things going there. Been away from any form of internet since Friday. I know you said it was ok that we thought you was a guy but I just would like to say from myself that I assumed you was a guy as well. I should have known by how well you asked your questions and explained things well.
