they even had the wrong instructions . on a 53 f100 the window goes in from the inside as it is larger than the hole . but carpenters instructions said to install from the outside . they sell crap . better use drake .

I called Carpenter and told them that I had torn their seal while trying to install my windshield and they were kind enough to send me another one at no charge which I greatly appreciated. I think I tore the first one because I was pulling the cord straight down the line of the glass instead of pulling towards the center of the glass. On try number two I managed to install the passenger half of the windshield in about five minutes and thought I was a pro. Then I broke the driver's side while trying to get it to go in. After having a new one made I called a buddy over to give me a hand and we removed the passenger side, installed the drivers side first, and got the passenger side in, mission accomplished. Then we tried to install the back glass. The Carpenter seals were at least 2" too long, so I ordered a pair from Drake and they fit perfectly. This was my first attempt at installing auto glass, hope it's my last!

On a slightly similar note I was installing O-rings once and tore up a bunch - everything was 'RIGHT' per the o-ring manufacturer - the only issue I could think of was the lube - I switched over to "o-ring" lube and I never tore another one . I would look closely at the lube aspect of this - I was shocked it made such a difference on those O-rings.

Rubber seals always have a minimum radius that they will accomodate. Forcing them into a tighter radius will cause "puckers" and gaps. The tighter the radius the smaller the seal. Unfortunately, the retailers don't know or don't care and sell one size seal for all applications. Seals are hard enough to get to fit right without the additional problem of having the wrong size seal. The oversized seals will eventually lay flat (the puckers will go away) but the seals will never be as good as the correct seal especially when it rains.

  6. I believe you were pulling the rope straight back, towards the back of the car.

Try pulling the rope more vertically, you trying to lift the rubber lip up and over the pinch seam

Being an electrician, I decided to use wire pulling gel on my window install, since it worked so well pulling wire through conduits. It's the best thing I've ever tried for getting the windows and seals in place. It also cleans up nicely with water, so the mess isn't a problem. I lubed the seals inside and out, and then lubed up the window opening also, and they nearly fell in as I pulled the cord and had someone just holding pressure on the glass.

You're exactly right, I was pulling in the wrong direction. After I tore the first seal I did some more reading and found that the correct direction was up and towards the center of the glass, which only makes sense when you do it and can see how the string lifts the rubber lip on the seal up and over the sheetmetal. Live and learn - a lot of the things I'm doing in putting this car back together I'm doing for the first time, and I'm not afraid to give certain things a try, but I do hate when I tear stuff up. As always, the HAMB is a great resource.

Well after buying 2 sets of Carpenter seals, (rear windshields), I finally tried Drakes. They fit much better, but still not perfect. I don't understand why these rear window seals aren't formed to the shape of the opening. They are just round like a donut. Seems to me if they were formed to fit the shape of the opening, they would not tend to pucker in the corners. I just hope they seal out water so I don't have to go through this again anytime soon.
