Something New for YOU at Detroit AutoRama this year (2005)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by bashton, Dec 9, 2004.

  1. HAMB cars at this event can be for exibition only, let's say. No competition, no politics, no trophy, no problemo.

Give the HAMB entrant all the privilages of the others and maybe some gas money and/or extra passes.

Just a suggestion, I'll be appearing at the Charity Panel Jam if ya need me. [IMG]

  4. Detroit AutoRama RULES!! It has to be seen to be believed! I don't see what the problem is with this guy posting...this is a chance for the masses to get some KULTURE (yeah...I spelled it with a K) thrown at them. There's a TON of our style finished rides there, but this'll give the working class little guy a chance to show off his (or her) cool project or daily driver that has flair. Screw the politics...they only affect you if you're tryin to WIN somethin, not if you're tryin to SHOW somethin. Lighten up and have some fun for cryin out loud. [IMG]

You can't compare apples to oranges....that's the problem with "judged" custom car shows. Antique restorations are easilyjudged, but our stuff has too many differences. Which category is more desirable..."fresh suede" or "weathered shiny"???.. [IMG]...I don't think rat rods or bare metal cars belong in an indoor car show. Traditionally these shows are for finished "show cars", not daily drivers or "trend of the week" stuff......but I do enjoy Autorama, and thanks Bob for putting it on and trying to please everybody....My son and I always enjoy it.

Hi Bob, thanks for posting more information on the Autorama, I have always had a good time there, and the fact that they're encouraging the regular working mans homebuilt cars back into the show can only make it better.

I may go if I can find a truck/trailer to get my truck up there. I aint drivin' it up there in the slush! I will go up there anyway just as a spectator. So Denise, save a spot for me!

  16. I sent in entry last week so i will be there for sure. I am really looking foward to it.

  17. Denise...how long is the drive from here to there? I'm not one to do indoor shows but bringing the 999 car up might be fun. Yes I would have to trailer it. Wouldn't want to get it dirty before the show [IMG]

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to see that it is cool that Mr Autorama posted here. I hope he isn't scared off and answers some of the questions and suggestions. Too many cool people are scared off by the drama on here.

This was so much fun that I'm tempted to apply. They could be over run with old hot rods. (I don't drive a rat rod!)

Clark, it's exactly 500 miles from my place to York. It took us 9 hours cuz it was pouring rain. You might be able to travel alittle faster. I'd like to extend the invite to you and the So-What crew, you guys are more then welcome to stay here as well. I've got room and I'm 15 minutes, via all freeway, to Cobo Hall.

It's going to be a GREAT weekend!

Ya know what guys? I'll be going to the show anyway, to check out all the cars, and more so to hang out with friends (And it sounds like meet some HAMBers that I don't yet know! [IMG]).

Why in the fuckin world would it bother me if there were more cars that I was "in to" at this show? [IMG]

Are you guys just pissed that when this gets trendy you won't be "cool" anymore? Then you'll have to sell your Rockasilly outfits just like you had to sell your WCC gear... [IMG]

I never thought I would actually have a chance to say anything to Bob Larivee.
Bob, Thank You for reprinting Henry Gregor Felsens books! I read them in Junior High School and loved them. After I graduated from High School, I realized what jewels they are but could not find a copy anywhere.
When you had the books reprinted and sold as a boxed set, I bought a set immediately. I talk about them a lot and show them to people but will not let them out of my sight. I value them highly and I Thank You for reprinting them.
    Bruce Garrett
P.S. Please except my apologies for the idiots on the HAMB. They may not know that you are a REAL car guy

I had heard through the grapevine, that this section was coming to this years event. I have enjoyed your event for many years, and look forward to many more to come. I feel that the addition to this years show will be a hit.

Like many others, I do not feel that this is SPAM, for his own personal gain, it is just letting everyone know that there is finally an event, that will recognize these vehicles for what they are, pieces of art. I do not care if this annoys anyone, but like it or not, the vehicles you build are just like any others, for enjoyment. The Detroit Autorama can do nothing but good for the traditionalist, it could be a showcase for many people, and help others realize that you do not need to be a "Foose" or "Coddington," or have the bank accounts of "Trump" or "Gates," to fully enjoy the addiction of Hot Rods.
Just my 2 cents, I will shut up now. -Joe

Like I said before, I wish we could attend a show of this size.
Many of our HAMB friends will be there, many more we have not had the pleasure of meeting.....
HAMB artists who not only help support this board, but are also going to be supporting charity causes.....
Maybe even Hootch/Ho, who keeps trying to convince us she is still quite virginal....She sold me waterfront property off Calumet Harbor,too.....
This show deserves support......fukket......if Kali's surgery turns out well, we are going to try and be there.
Maybe they can bring MOUSE! back again......

I'll be there with my car. I'm looking forward to it.

    HRLC,

Can you recomend any hotels in the area. My wife and daughter will be with me so I will need something close and decent.

    Thanks,

    OK, Thanks to everyone who has responded and PLEASE, keep the suggestions coming and allow me to answer a few of the questions and concerns;

INPUT: YES....It is our intent to listen to what you guys want. I am in no ways an expert, but I am smart enough to know that to make this really work, we need to listen to YOU.

"Ahem, the Special Place" YES, this area is indeed the lower level. Here is some facts for you; The Detroit AutoRama STARTED in "the basement", or as we like to call it, Michigan Hall. Back when we had bands, Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent and Bob Segar performed down there. What better place to build up a Traditional and Rat Rod Show then the place where AutoRama started? Besides, being in this seperated area allows us not only more room, but the ability to have our own space and our own "rules", i.e. No Billet and no multi bizillion $ paint jobs!

Applications: THANKS HotRodLadyCrusr for posting the app. This one is missing the zip for our office, which is 48326. Scope out the updated entry form which is up now. It is much more user-friendly (and the zip is on it!)

DEADLINE: It is indeed January 30, but at the rate we are going, it may be filled before then, so please submit your app asap.

WHAT ABOUT KUSTOM'S? If it is a true "Traditional" style, it belongs here. If not, you should enter the "regular" autorama. See www.autorama.com for the proper application. If you aren't sure, shoot me some pics or give me a call to discuss.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THAT EXPOSURE TO THE KIDS?....EXACTLY Peter Pan of Chicago! Maybe a few of the kids with the Tuner cars, i.e. Rice Rockets will get a chance to truly appreciate what this portion is all about. Maybe some that are considering a Tuner Car will think about an alternative!

CLASSES/AWARDS: We are working on this to make it fit. So far, we will have Best Engineered, Best Interior, Best Patina, Best Mill, Furthest Distance/Driven, Furthest Distance/Not Driven, and Lowest along with Celebrity Picks by Jimmy Shine, Bob Larivee Sr. Chuck Miller and a whole bunch more. I will hit you with updates on this as we confirm. I fully understand you guys don't want some cheesy door stop trophy and I understand there is no Competition between cars. The Special Awards (non celebrity picks) are being built by Josh and Race, and these babys are cool. I will post pics of these on the website when I get some from Josh.

ITS MORE ABOUT GIVE AND TAKE: YES, the floor will be shared with the Tuners, but we will have TWO distinct areas. The Tuners are over THERE, while the Traditional Rods and Rat Rods are over HERE. Only the appropriate vendors will be in each area. There will be seperate stages and seperate awards and awards presentations. This also means $500 cash for best club display on BOTH sides.

TROPHYS: HotRodLadyCrusr is right...the trophys are indeed hand made works of art! (Thanks to Josh and Race)

Keep it comin' I will check in periodically to post answers or you can email me bashton@autorama.com or call 248-373-1700.
