Until we see it in someone elses eyes!

I struck up a conversation with an ol' gent last night waiting to be seated at the local diner and he was really excited to see my 32 pickup in the parking lot,,,,,

He relayed the tale of his first car,,,,a 1930 Ford pickup,,,we were seated next to each other so the conversation continued.

After we had finished eating I ask him if he would like to take a ride,,,,Man,,he lit up with a big grin and said YES SIR.

I'm no spring chicken but this guy has got to be in his late 70's or early 80's and I haven't seen anybody that excited since my kids were little and woke up Christmas morning!

I took him for a short ride while my wife and his had coffee and awaited our return,,,,he told tales of riding the dirt roads as a young lad and how he wished he could relive his youth,,,,

When we returned to the diner we bid our goodbyes,,,he told me that was a great feeling to look thru a flat windshield again,,and that my truck had a little more get up and go than his Model A.

He and his wife left in a late model Buick,,,but he still had that same grin on his face,,,and ya know what,,,so did I. HRP

I gotta agree. Now I love driving my hot rod, but sometimes the biggest kick I get out of building and driving old cars is the enjoyment of others when they see them. My '34 is like an old timer magnet and they usually have an interesting story or two to share. Kool!

My dad bought a Model A coupe that still ran great while I was in college. He had it repainted and I took it on New Year's Eve to pick up the girl I was dateing.

Her folks came out to see it and were thrilled -- that was their "courtin'" vehicle.

Yeah, it was neat.

My neighbors stopped by shortly after I moved in while I working on my coupe in the driveway. Both recounted storys of the good ol days with cars like that. Well the wife went on to tell about a car just like that only with a rumble seat, I didnt want her to go any further than that , she is in her seventies and I dont want to know what she did in a rumble seat!

Great statement and story! Hell it made me feel good just readin' it. I wonder how many folks that older guy told that story to and how it would bring his smile back every time.
My coupe is not on the road yet and sometimes I get a little down about our busy modern lives.
One of the best things about The Jalopy Drags at Beaver Springs (Thanks Larry)was seein' how much fun folks were havin' runnin' their hot rods.
Thanks for the story. It's folks like you that just add to the smiles. Have a good one,Smokey

My neighbor is 75 and allways checked in during the build of my T giving his sometimes crazy advise on how to do things. He drives a 2005 sunbird with stick on flames, which he had transferd from the two previuos cars.
He was allways pestering me to finish up the car before they put him in the ground...lol When the car was safe enough to give him a ride that's exactly what I did, man he loved it. A couple weeks ago he had his car at the shop and wanted to know if I could give him a ride down to the shop. I was really short on time but I ask what he wanted to take to the shop. He looked at me like a young kid that had been asked to go to the candy store and pointed towards the garage. I'll tell you what he hopped over the sides of that car slicker than **** and asked me what I was waiting for. I don't know how he kept from getting bugs across his teeth from the ear to ear smile on his face.
Yes it's good to let others remind you of how much fun you're having.

Same kinda thing happened to me too. Guy I recently met just had to have a ride in the 55 chev and waited all summer. Couple weeks ago he pulled into my driveway and asked again. We took the car out for coffee and he was smileing all the way. Gives ya a great feeling to make somebody elses day one in a while, while making you appreciate what you've done for your car as well

Good job.

Sometimes we forget that those "old guys" were our inspiration.

Got to keep the fires burning and carry on the tradition.

Man what a neat story and that guy never forget it.
I have a little story myself... I was on a cruise with my car club a few years back and we stopped at a small town for lunch. This Caddy or Buick pulled up and four ladies got out, they were kind of the cl***y type. the walked around looking at all of our club cars and this one old gal stopped by my '55 Ford Victoria and said she and her husband had one just like it, same colors and all (Buckskin Tan/ Snowshoe White) back when they were first married, she looked at the back seat and with a *****le in her eye she said something like that "that brings back memories".

A guy I met at the gym, 66 yrs old, likes to ride in my cars. He always wants to go to car shows with me. He has an original 63' split window vette he bought brand new. When he sees me, he always asks if I'm going to any shows and if I want him to go. I always say, "No, thats OK". He keeps asking until I say, " If you want to go, go".

Then I found out why. If he asks his wife, she saids no! But if he tells her that I asked him to go, she can't say no.

20. I use my rod as much as i can including going to work in it occasionally...remember I work in the centre of Birmingham surrounded by tower blocks so i only go in when I can park under the office in a safe area.....(it's also £14.50 or $29 a day to park in a car park) .......so with rods not exactly being "common" over here you can imagine the reaction I get at 7.00am as I hammer through the urban jungle......all of my co-workers have been down to check it out and hear it set the other cars alarms off when it fires up......
It's moments like that that make me realise just how ****ing fantastic owning/driving a rod is

I don't think you ever get over being a gearhead, even after your body won't let you play anymore.
Take an old guy for a ride, you might get more out of it than he does.
HRP good job!

Lets project this out a little further. One day your grandchildren will ask what it was like to drive a hot rod. For that reason you should take every opportunity to take trips and meet people and put stories in the bank.

Two years ago I went over to a guys place to ask him questions about adjusting the carb on a stock Model T. He had 4 Ts at the time with 2 running. He had to start one of them up to show me how to do it so I asked him if he would take me for a ride. He said - with great excitement, You want to go for a ride? I said ya. So he said get in, we took off down the road wide open, he turns to me and says "Ya hear that" I said what? he says there's some rod noise, I'll have to adjust them one of these days. He was a T mechanic since he was 15 years old.

He was 98 years old. He kept on saying that he was going to have an auction and sell the cars, he did the next year and then died.

He was a neat old guy and knew everything about Ts. He built the 2 shown from the ground up. Pictures show him with his cars at age 98.

Ya I'm having fun!!!!!

As much as I love hot rods, I sure hope nobody cut up that old guys cars. Knowing the story kinda makes them non-hot rodable.

I was at the auction, one of the family members got the "open air depot hack". There were mostly T clubers buying parts and rebuilt engines. The highest priced item was a stationary engine.

Better pictures of his driveable cars.

I took a stock T engine to him to check out a crack and I had to hold on to him and take him out to his shop AND steady him while he honed out the cyclinders. Hubert was really a cool guy, I sure wished I had know him longer.

In one of the boxes of stuff I bought was 2 street signs with his name on them. I was going to go to the nursing home and give them back along with some of the pictures, but he didn't last that long.
