working on this 53 Merc flathead, going to remove the oil pump but it looks like some kind of modified setup - I'm just wondering what it is - and it looks like I have to remove the byp*** nut and spring and there's a socket head bolt down in there, I think. Mostly, I'd like to know what this pump setup is.

I've never seen anything like it, and don't know why anyone would need anything more than currently offered by most vendors. There's a big contingent of flathead experts on the Fordbarn who think anything more than stock is a waste.

Even in the olden days there was the Lincoln V-12 pump which pushed more volume, and it didn't require cutting on the housing. Your pump looks Ford-ish, but not early Ford flathead.

Brazing...he cracked it getting it out.
Weirdo pickup...pump was from a '49 merc or a pickup, and he couldn't find the right pickup for a center sump '53, so he made this elegantly curved baroque version in the Home Depot plumbung aisle.

Bruce, that's not baroque, it's more rococo.

Here's the pump removed, and there is a 5/16 socket head in behind the byp*** nut, you can see it sticking out below the pump mounting flange. Also attached is a picture of the pan, with the stellings breather removed, which is chromed but turned green (oh, sorry, patina) from it's 50 years of sitting. The pan has a couple of npt fittings welded into it with AN fittings on the outside, which he apparently had hooked to an aircraft oil cooler (which I got with the motor), however there weren't any lines inside the pan like you'd expect with a full flow filter or cooler..............weird. The pan doesn't have any ribs on it.

The pan is '49-'51 Ford car. The '52-'53 Ford/Merc pans had the ribbed center sump pan.

That appears to be a Ford "long" pump, modified for some racing application. Originally, that pump had a fitting and bowl type of pick up that mounted directly to the pump. I have one in my engine in my 32
