Help him out. Provide an indefinite home for that 51 on your property, and cosign on the new ride to cover the gap from selling the 51.
Bob, YOU need to own a Shoebox AND a Merc. It's just natural.. If it's actually/still in your name, take it away from him till he smarts up or buy it from him and make a profit on it when he says what the hell did I do that for? wants it back in a couple years! I still want ALL the cars I owned for just a few months each back when I was a teenager and regret selling each of them.
Actually I own a Merc and two shoeboxs, until they pay me back. It's a project car,not a show car. It was gonna be a driver. Nicest part on the car is the dash. It a fun car though. I like driving it.
Ill trade him a 72 chevy nova for that car lol .. is that new enough then he can trade that for a tuner .. that 51 is nice and shoebox's are right up my alley . wish i could afford one .. damn .. kid doesnt know how lucky he is
I think most of us have sold Cars we regret parting with. Maybe, it doesn't have wipers, heater or any suspension. Maybe He's tired of tinkering. But, if He does get something newer. I don't think He'll be able to wear those shoes anymore !
Cool ride, reminds me of that ZZtop line...'got my gold tooth displayed'...I sometimes regret selling my first...a 67 camaro SS 350. Couldn't afford to keep it at the time, and now I wouldn't be able to buy one either...crazy.
I'll say this. I am 27 now. I bought my first car when I was 14 (a `63 Lemans convertible, 326, 3 speed) dad and I cleaned it up, I drove it and then sold it for a `64 Ford shortbox pickup. Dad was cool with that. I sold the `64 and bought an `84 302 Mustang 'vert. Dad was cool with that. I moved out.... Dad was VERY COOL with that. I sold the mustang and bought a brand new truck, started riding and working on old bikes instead. Now I drive a beater `78 Poncho and have a few bikes. I just bought this 1956 Pontiac and I thought my dad was going to lose it right therewhen he saw it (so much so it lives in his garage across town)... very cool. Where I was going with this isn't where it ended up... I was going to say after buying the `56 I will never trade that old car smell for the smell of a new car again. It took me almost 10 years to figure it out, and I wish I had that `63 and `64 back... but it makes me love the `56 even more. Getting into the `56 for the first time, that smell, the way it felt, it was like the worm at the bottom of a Tequila bottle... it ain't for everybody but those who like it LOVE it!! Joe
Sad to say the ol' car just may not be his thing in the long run. I had a friend in high school (nearly 20 years ago now) who's dad had a gas station/repair garage. He never got into cars though his dad was a real old car nut. His younger brother was really into cars, blew through a bunch of them and still has a gorgeous '64 Chevy stepside pickup all tricked out that's been in storage since he joined the Air Force. Anyway, for his first car my friend's dad built him a perfect '59 Impala, black on black, 350, really nice. He got a hair up his ass, didn't like the "big car" and sold it to buy a Porsche 924 (yeah the one with the Audi engine). He wound up winding his way through a series of euro cars including a nice 911 and his current VW GTI and we're going to Vegas next week to pick up his latest 911 SC. The old cars weren't his bag and he never looked back. I'm sure he cringes when he sees what '59 Impalas go for at Barret Jackson but he's happier with what he has now. I'm glad that didn't rub off on me.
Just out front cleaning it,to take some more pic's. Wish I could finish it. Maybe another kid will get it and have some fun with it.
Sorry didn't read through all the post....where is it and how much? I have a 17 year old just getting started and thinks it is bitchin'. He has already done the import thang and thank the lord came to his sense's. Fitysix
Get him a cheap used Honda Civic, sell the 51 and build your self that hot rod, you've been talking about. Just do it.
buy the 51 yourself and let him get his honda or whatever. then finish the 51. at least that way it would stay in the family and your boy can get jealous when its done.
in 10 years? if he sells that thing, he will be talking about that thing in 6 months wishing he never sold it.
you seem way cool, not forcing him into something he doesn't want, or doesn't know he wants. Kids gotta make thier own choices like you say.
How many other guys here think "its my car, I'll do what I want"? His car, his choice??????????????????? Good onya Badbob.
I love my kids. They make their own decisions, and I only step in when it's gonna cost me money. My parents always butted in on my business. Good parents, but too controling. I don't want to be that conversation later on in his life...My dad made me do this or that!
Good point, Bob. One thing that I disagree with some parents about is buying their kids' cars. I remember what my dad said, "You can have any goddamn car that you want as long as you can pay for it." My ex bought my daughter a '66 Mustang in '89 against my wishes and she destroyed it within a year. My dad died soon after, left her a little money and I "forced" her to buy a nice '85 4 cyl. 'Stang. That Pony lasted her 5 or 6 years because it was her bucks which paid for and maintained it. BTW, all kids aren't into what we are. Everybody isn't into traditional rodding or customizing. If your son wants a tuner, S-10 or whatever and can pay for it himself, I'd allow him to sell the Ford to pay for it. Kids *do* need to experiment as I stated. Jan
wow im shocked, but then im not. Kids will be kids. He will regret this decision if he lets it go. Sorry to hear about your loss.
Whatever he gets,it's gonna stay stock, unless he gets a job and can pay for it. I'm not gonna finance another whim. I've got about 10K invested in it,so i'm just looking to get as much of MY money back. I'm not gonna touch the next one, unless it needs brakes or something like that, maintenence stuff.
I just sold mine, and im already bummed. Had to happen though, however sad. He'll have a bunch of good memories about the car , even if it isnt really his thing.
a guy i work with is upsessed with drifting and tuner cars...his dad is 100% traditional...he is in fact the man that got me into hotrods and trucked my 28 A sedan back...his dad bought him a 50s chevy fast back that runs and now he wants a freaking tuner...man what i wouldnt do for that car...it just needs a lil work and it would be super cool.
