Hey Guys, New here and to hot rodding, but I'm giving it a whirl! My dad passed away in March and we miss him dearly. He was a life long car builder and hot rod enthusiast tearing up the roads in northeast Ohio from Lorain to Norwalk. lol. He wanted to pass on the tradition and left 3 cars for my 2 brothers and I.

Mine is obviously in need of some work....But a great start. My brothers have vowed to help and we have made some good headway so far. We started by ripping out that nasty MII front end and built a new cross member for a transverse spring front. IMG_0062.JPG IMG_0622.JPG

I've analyzed about a gozillion pictures and I realize just how important stance is. I found some craigslist specials for $300 and will see how they work out. 205/60/15 fronts and 29/18.5/15 rears. IMG_0745.JPG IMG_0747.JPG

  6. Removing that independent front suspension is a great start! HRP

Those rear tires are way, way too wide. Way out of proportion and will look odd.

This is about where I have landed to date. The man I picked up the wheels and tires from happened to be a totally awesome guy with tradition hot rods galore in his shop. I spent over an hour talking with him and he was such a great person. Before he sent me on my way, IMG_0843.JPG he made sure I didn't leave without some extra goodies, an original grill insert and emblem. It wasn't in very good shape and I almost thought about just making it a wall hangar, but I thought he was nice enough to give it to me, then I would make it part of my build. It was hard to make myself cut it..(almost seemed sacrilegious) but I made it to fit the 32' grill shell that my dad wanted to put on the car. Thanks Jerry.. I hope you're not mad!

I knew the wheels and tires would catch flack on here. I'm trying to get a good look and be budget minded. I really wanted the rake but with less width. Eventually I'll get there. Something drew me to those tires and wheels. And maybe it was just to make a relationship with the gentleman who sold them to me. I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.

Welcome Nicholas to the HAMB. You have to understand this site is dedicated to "Traditional" hot rods, basically pre-65 styling. Wide wheels like you're using, and low profile/radial tires, came around later on and so are not considered traditional, so you're going to get some push back from the guys here about them, and other non-traditional things that may come up. But listen up to these guys, this place is the best for advice on traditional hot rodding, you won't likely find a better source.

Ford suspension might as well have a ford grill shell.

  15. I dig the car immensely. Im not normally a fan of tube axles, but I really like how that one looks on the front. Just a little different, just like the car itself. Fill out your profile the rest of the way so we know where your from. Most guys on here are always looking to help out on a project like this. If your in VA or MD id come give you a hand! Your brothers got the 40 Pickup and 35 Coupe?

Are you, by chance, a red-headed step child?

You promise me not to install those tires and wheels, I will give you a set of four powder coated 16" Early Ford wires.

Here's the steel out for a 32 Chevy & welcome to the HAMB from down under. Sorry but I'm with the others on the wheels. Good to see another Chevy but I'm biased to them. A 32 Chevy grill would look so much nicer than that other brand.;)

That's mighty generous of you! How about he leaves them on just enough to break in the motor?;)

I am on board with the rear tires (to wide) and guess I am a BOWTIE fan (have 4). So I have a question as to why put a buggy spring on a Chevy when elliptical will work? Maybe I am speaking out of turn as my 34 is set up this way and I think rides better than a buggy spring.

Well, a few reasons I suppose. First of all if you recall it had a mustang II, and that obviously had to go. The original frame horns were gone that had the front spring hangers, no axle or springs. So I did have a couple other options laying around. One...
Was this 30's Plymouth axle. We had plans to try to fab up some springs and place the axle on top. But not enough clearance, and I'd be stuck with drums. Plus the location of the front axle is placed too far back in my opinion. I love the look of hair pins, and with the spring behind setup it stretches the wheelbase a couple more inches and puts the c/L of the axle just in front of the c/L of the grill and enhances the stance In my opinion. I also have a 30's ford with wishbone, but want to have that dropped, surfaced, and drilled for future prospects.
By the time I priced all the pieces and parts to get old stuff to work, it was more feasible for me to get a kit from speedway

Now it makes sense, I do have a 34 4 inch dropped axel if you are interested.

Hi Nicholas, how's your car coming along? Made any progress lately?
In your first photo there is a SBC fitted, is that motor a runner?
This is my 39 Chev with a 34 grill and 'too wide' wheels

I'm still to do paint and interior but its awesome getting to the drivable stage.
    Cheers Aaron.
