  1. I had a 60 Vair and it had a gas heater, instant heat but lowered the gas mileage in winter.

Bought a '65 coupe with a 140, 4 spd a month ago. Redoing the brakes now and the fuel system next. Hope to have it going in a couple months. I've never driven or even ridden in a corvair, but from everything I've read this one should be alot of fun!

Sweet car...I love corvairs. In high school 3 of my friends had them and where in a corvair club. Fun cars that handle awesome. I am always on the watch for a good 65-66 because I love them. Make sure to buy how to keep your corvair alive by Richard Finch he is a genius when it comes to corvairs. He is a awesome guy too got to meet him once.

nice car. what kind of wheels are you going to put on it. hope not that crap they sell today. chrome reverse w/ baby moons would look cool. tires , shocks and sway bars do wonders for the terrible understeer built into these cars. auto or stick? had a few myself. one had the gas heater. sounded like a little gas engine in the trunk. Nader was an idiot.

Hey, Baileigh, Corvairs can be kooool. Another HAMBer here, tho he hasn't posted to a while, Rot'n Kustom, has one. We discussed various "Old School" treatments that could be done to raise up the kool factor on these cars. I think the best was to go...after dicounting the popular Gasser look, and a 50's custom approach, which doesn't really work very well, is to go with a concept car type look. The car already has Ghia/Pininfarina styling cues, and it wouldnt' take very much to further exaggerate these cues, and add more Euro concept car styling to build yourself a very unique custom car. It would take some research to get the right things going, but I think it would be a different approach to build a very different car! The Italian coachbuilders did many styling studies on American cars, for the manufacturers, such as the Rodine 63 Corvette, and lots of cars for Chrysler. So it IS an era perfect thing to do. And it IS custom once you start changing body lines, grilles, lights, etc.
Either that, or go with anything Gary C. has to offer!

    MMMM Then all he'd need is a 283 :D.

FWIW theres a guy here in the service that has (IIRC) a touch newer one, it's got the 455/TH425 out of a Toronado in it. Still has the back seat too (seatback doubles as a firewall/bulkhead). Real clean car.

Coolest part is, parked, or just cruising you'd never know (unless you looked under it, but that's cheating ;)). Yes, it hauls ass, handles pretty good too (amazingly enough).

Thats a beauty, was, in the day a Corvair line mechanic. Got to where I could do a reseal and valve job, all buttoned up, then road test it right after lunch. Several of the other mechanics were doing a slow burn, cause they refused to work on them. With flat rate, we was gittin paid for 8 hrs to GETR ER DONE. DON'T put more then 18 lb air in the front tires. and she will handle like a sports car. Love the wheels. They were made for that one. And use Dayco HD belts and you will get a lot longer belt life. 14. So, is your mom's name Linda? Are you picking it up because of the company liquidation?

I like the Corvairs especially the later versions kinda borrowed the styling from the Vettes and the future early camaros.

I had a supercharged Spyder a guy gave me that was a really nice car but the wife hated it so I traded it for a spool of Mig wire and a gallon of Bondo to get it out of the driveway.

That's the single best bit of advice in this thread.

If you air up all tires evenly, the car will skate around like it's on ice. Keep those fronts at 18psi.

  20. Isn't that Linda Wall's car from Corvair Underground?

Upper left corner. If it's not, then it is sort of a strange coincidence that it's the same year, color and wheels . . .

    Nice car?

    Yes.

    But fast?

    No.

    Here's a road test on a '62 150 hp Turbo Spyder. 0-60 in 10.8 and the quarter in a mere 18.5.

I think maybe it's one of those 'the older I get the better I was' kinda things.

    Again though - nice car.

Slow...but it sure did get some looks when she would drive it. Plus my Mom was hot, so I'm sure that added to it.

Very nice little ride. I come from a Corvair family. My old man had two and my brother had three, including a 210 Corsa. It was a fast little bastard. Definitely change the wheels, though.

I drive my 65 Monza Every day- Its not fast but you get ALOT of attention. Everytime I stop anywhere, someone runs up to me to ask about it or tell a Corvair Story. Its funny to watch people on the sides of the road or driving next to you stare as you go by.

Heres mine before i put the interior in.

My wife had a Corvair like yours when we were dating many years ago . I loved that car ! My only complaint was the fan belt regularly coming off . It was an automatic with the gear selector on the dash - Was cool ! You have a great looking car ! The wheels look fine to me but it'll be YOUR car and YOUR choice ! Someone suggested looking into an alternative heating source and in your location , I'd have to agree with that ! Good luck !

Dad was a GM mechanic, did most of the Corvair work at the dealership. Corvairs up to '65 had only one u-joint(in-board) per drive axle(like VW), so when cornering the body roll would adversely effect the camber of the rear wheels. '65 and later had a u-joint at the trans and at the wheel(like Corvette and others), this allowed ther tire contact patch to stay flatter?
Heaters depend on air circulating around the engine. The metal shrouds that envelope the engine were/are a pain in the butt to remove and replace properly. Without them air is lost and heat as well, they are also needed to circulate cooling air in the summer. Engine is a flat six, with pushrod tubes that connect the block and heads(like VW and Harley). The exhaust manifolds run very close to these tubes and the heat kills the o-rings that should prevent oil from leaking down into the above-mentioned heat shrouds. Accumulated oil in these shrouds will be heated enough by the manifolds to create smoke(guess how I know this).
I came to own several Corvairs, because their owners were unwilling to pay for replacing the o-rings, etc. Dad made quick work of it and making sure all the sheet metal was in place. I thought they were great handling cars. Good traction in winter, but a little light in the front. After making an unplanned pass through the DOT front lawn when the 'vair wouldn't turn I put some weight in the trunk(front) :D
    Good luck ...
