Don't drive that on the Wisconsin winter roads! Are you nuts? That will last two seasons before it's rusty, ventilated toast!

Winter cars are '80s and '90s POS cars - you should know THAT!

If that car were mine, I'd definitely change the wheels - those are what I call "trailer wheels".

I really do like your Corvair! That will make a fun driver for you...just don't make it a winter car!

    Loud and clear!

  7. Doesn't look like it needs a repaint... So I did a quicky Photochop, but then again, I like green too

Drawer pull "grill" it's almost flat in that area on 60's, an hour or two working out a pattern with $60 in drawer pulls and that sticky clay stuff they use to hang pictures, then mark it and drill, drill drill.

They used to sell a tube grill to make Corvairs look more like a normal car too.

Panel painted, some with while fogged outline, some with darker fogged outlines and some with lavendar/kelly green with dark blue/green fogged oulines

Baby moons and wide or 1" wide whitewalls on Mustang 6 cylinder 14" wheels powdercoated black (same 4 on 4.5" bolt pattern)

    Lavendar/kelly grren 'flake roof

Lower it a few inches, lake pipes would help it look lower, or course they would be dummies...

You have to remember that we are talking 1962. That was quick for those years, Super Stock chevys were only running in the mid 12's.

My Corvair had steering problems--maybe it was because the front end was always in the air--a Big Block Chevy and 4 speed can do that---

Somewhere around the homestead (here) I have a 6 volt gas heater out of an old VW. You might be abvle to find one of those for your car.

If you don't want to go that route, someone sells a 'Mojave' (sp?) heater that uses an oil cooler for the old VW crowd, it should work for you as well.

Anybody photoshop some better rims on there for me?

  15. "Rims?"

These had 4 bolt wheels 4 on 4.5", it might be tough to find older style custom wheels unless you look for 4 bolt Cragar SS, or AR S200 coke bottles or Daisys. That's why I went with the moons in my Photochop... depends on how much you want to spend on it.

You may want to PM Wheelkid to see if he can find some 14" 6 cylinder Mustang wheels good enough to chrome. a set of those with bullet caps and lugs would look good.

Might be heading out there in a couple of weeks or so.

  18. in 1968 I was new car service manager for a chevrolet dealer
we had a whole row of Corvairs out back with smoke tinted windows
SO BE VERY CAREFULL with that gas heater as it may burn your car up

Don't worry about the heater. Just like a VW, you don't GET heat. It is only there for pretend!

Drive it when its warm and park it for the winter. Sweet car. I got my mom's car as well but it was a rotted out POS '54 Chevy truck that nearly EVERYTHING has to be replaced on. I wish my mom were in CO instead of MI!

I wonder why Chevy would build a car with such a crappy heater.

A possibility for wheels on this car is a set from Stoked Out Specialties. http://www.stokedoutspecialties.com/ These guys are in the Dallas area and drop the 61, 62 and 63 Buicks and Oldsmobiles little cars. They have the same 4 lug bolt pattern and they have wheels made that look pretty good. However ~~~~~~ they are from Billet Specialties. But hey, I think they still look pretty good. You can see them on their web-site on some of the feature cars. One of the things I really like is they LOOK like they are 5 lug wheels but aren't. Check them out. Another possibility is like finding hens teeth but, Moon made 4 lug spiders for these back in the day. My son has a set of NOS ones he scored off Ebay a few years back for his Olds Jetfire. He won't get off them either so you'll have the fun of the hunt.
    Regards!

PS. There are also 15" factory wheels for these cars so your not stuck with the 13" or 14" if thats not your bag.

You asked about wheels. Only 2 ways to go IMO.

#1, 5 spoke cragars or early torq thrusts, about 14X7. If you're willing to do the 5 lug conversion.

#2, widened steel wheels with flat police caps, the ones with just a bowtie. No trim rings. Body color to dress it up, black/silver for a more performance vibe.

Is this car a 4 popper/auto? You mentioned slowness, a couple of the ones I grew up around were modified, ala street SCCA. A stripped down 4 speed sixer with the 4 carb setup and some tuning is no slouch. Not drag race chevelle fast, but legit performance cars for their time. If your musclecar was a poser, the old man's vair would spank ya in a straight line, and even if it was real muscle you were getting spanked the moment stopping & turning got involved.

Used to be able to buy chrome caps to do a hacksawed split bumper deal. Love the way it makes em look, but they're made of unobtainium anymore.

Damn, I can only imagine what a beast one of them would be with a modern all aluminum turbo'd, overdriven transaxle out back. The basic platform would be FEROCIOUS with 300 horse & good brakes without V8 weight to spoil dynamics.

have fun with it, cool car

If you wanna get violent with it, Lakewood probably still has the V8 conversion kit!
The 180hp Spyders were real sleepers, providing the tuning was right. Given the constant oil leaks, we always suspected that there was some British engineering involved in their design.

Back in 68, I worked for a dealership in Fairborn, Ohio. The highest paid mechanic in the shop was the Corvair mechanic. He was the only one in the shop that would work on them. He was real upset when Nader killed them. Hot Rod did an article on upgrading the suspension with different shocks and springs. After the modifications, it would hang curves with Vettes and Porsches with no problems. Unfortunately, by them Nader had done the damage.

Anyone remember the commercial with the guy shooting an arrow, with the weight at the rear, and slow motion film of the arrow wobbling in flight? The point was supposed to be that a rear engine vehicle was unstable.

Awesome car! I have a 60 corvair, white 2dr with 15 inch Radir wheels. The 60 is unique in that it has the gas heater. If you get the heater working it is really nice. Instant immediate heat. Who cares if it detracts from the 25 mpg some. Great cars that ride smooth as silk like cadillacs. Signed nader hater:D

  27. Looks like a really nice car. congratulations.
GM designed the 'vair as an answer to small european cars of the time-- Funny things is, BMW pretty much copied the personality of the early Corvair for their 2002 if you ask me.
I would want to stick with a VW type color palette with that body style-- subdued colors. i think it fits. The roof is a different story- really sexy lines. Nice place for some pearl white or black w/ monster flake.

I keep thinking '63-'67 Vette bumperettes on that body style....and '61 impala bullet taillights//

Grew up in Chicago..drove all winter in two Corvairs. One was a totally junk 1961 4 door stripper..colder inside than outside..
My 65 140hp Monza was just as cold but so nice..I guess it felt better.

A friend of mine was a postman..used these butane hand and chest warmers walking his route. I got a few of them..big one by my feet..others in my jacket..
    Sorta worked.
I guess now I'd go Gerbling..electric heated clothes for motorcycles. Not real expensive and will keep you..not passengers..kinda nice and warm.
Maybe your sweating body would act like a heater for your frozen..dying passengers..;)

I remember every winter why I live down here now..

make sure you fill the front tire with the recommended amount of air. 35 lbs with no weight on them is why most people had problems.

I know, my Mom put a bumper sticker on it that says "Ralph Who?" way back in the 80's

Now the sticker is faded and way hard. It is soo ugly. I will have to scrape it off.
