  1. Some guy's like to find things. If you spend a good part of your life looking for antique brass door knobs you're going to get good at it finding them, and you're going to have a big pile of them when you get old. For some guy's it's about the hunt rather than the build or the drive. It's just as valid a way of enjoying old cars as anything else. More valid than some of the things I've seen done to nice cars that were saved from the "horders."

metalshapes had it right. We should be thanking the "horders." Wishing there wasn't an warehouse full of nice old tin somewhere or a backyard full of future project cars is just stupid.

because it's easier to change the frame from under the car than to rebuild brakes or rebuild kingpins???

That's almost exactly what my friend that thinks we are in competion for the number of vehicles owned tells people when they ask him why he owns so may. He tells them that he just likes buying them so he can drag them home.

    2. A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the***** of contempt or ridicule.
    Example:
In my atempt at sarcasm, I replaced the word "cars" with "money" in his original statement to point out the irony of his rediculous original post in an effort to make the OP the***** of contempt and ridicule.

Oh, BTW, while your $$$ sits in the bank drawing 3% interest, the economic inflation rate is right around 4-5%, so infact your money is rotting away to nothing.

However, with the highest reguard for your****ertion that it is important to "preserve history" by saving out of production cars, I would be happy to trade you some of your money for a 1984 Ford Tarus...

If I had 4 or 5 acres.. I would hoard cars too.. keep the good ones.. for a later date in time.. and part out the rest for Car nuts that would need parts.. it is getting very slim out there for the old stuff.. most that have lots do not want to part with those.. the others have been squashed.. I dont mind the hoarders.. just got to keep watch on there stuff.. and dont let it slip by.. because one day.. they might be gone too.

as far a frame swap.. Im doing just that.. just something different..

What My Henry J had was good.. but Rotted.. its no different than changing out as original engine for a modern engine..

I nFrance at the end of WW2 a gentleman who will remain nameless but this is true, loved exotic fast cars and because of the postwar times, these cars were cheap, even free. He would speed all over France in his Delages,Buggatti's ,Delahays,Bentleys,( note ,i say he had more than one of each) until it got to point where he was filling all the streets around his neighbourhood in Paris with parked cars as he wore them out. At nght he could be seen walking the streets acting strangely and many accused him of being mad. What he was doing was looking at each car and placing a lit oil lamp on each one so it wouldn't get hit by passing cars or trucks.
After a few years the local authorities told him to get rid of them so he tried to sell them and know one wanted any of them. So he bought a chateu outside Paris and parked them there. In 1984 a couple of German Journo's asked if they could take some pictures of his cars.
He said yes,on the understanding that they do not publish the pictures or name him. Which is exactly what they did do .
The gentleman (Mr Dovaz) sued the journo's and won but by that time the word was out and people began saying he was a nutcase because of what he had done to these precious cars, although know one would pay his price for any of them.
Eventually he bought another place and moved his cars to remain anonymous but in the meantime he set up a Museum to display his treasures. the***** really hit the fan then when people began to really attack him.But still knowone would pay the asking price and in dispair he closed his display. He still has many cars ,many were sold to those who don't***** about and see the value in things.

So think about this when you approach an owner who may have something you desire. It's no good badmouthing someone just because they have something you want, it's better to say nothing and stay away or act in a civil manner and show you mean real buisiness.

forgot who it was but someone on here said that if it wasnt for the hoarders there wouldnt be much old tin or parts around.

but yeah i agree that some are*****s like my grandparents have a 67 camaro RS sitting in my aunts garage getting no love. but do they give it to there only grandson? no! "its to sentimental that was your great grandmothers first car" been tryin to get that thing out of them for like 10 years aahhhh!!!

  13. What I want to know is why, instead of whining about the cars they can't have for free and can't buy for any price, they don't just buy one of the billion or so cars that are actually for sale? Like the ones we have for sale?

Then I can take the money, go find some hoarder who will sell, and buy a bunch more - that you will also be able to buy.

It ain't rocket science folks -

If all of the Rusted and Barned Vintage Steel out there were to change into hands of Hambers and others that care...the economy could get a little boost..and over time, many would find ways of funding these projects...

    Yeah ..right..... !!

You are right. It's the "forbidden fruit" that some of us are talking about - we want those cars just because we know we can't have or get 'em. Seeing a field with half dozen "not for sale" cars or one that "he wants 10 times what it's worth" just sticks in the craw of some, yet we'll read about or see as many or more old cars that ARE for sale and affordable - and do nothing. Same goes for some who rant about saving cars from the crushers. If saved, many of them would likely end up in a field, rotting away with a "not for sale" sign on them - and others complaining about those "hoarders". And the circle goes on. These old meadow muffins, rusty relics, gonna fix 'er uppers, not for salers, or whatever anyone wants to call them are for future generations to discover, recover, restore or whatever, and as for the hoarders, collectors, savers, etc - good for them for saving some of 'em. Many share the same joy of ownership as those of us who restore, chop, rod or do whatever to our rides. But imagine 40 or 50 years from now when one of our kids or their kids discovers a "barn find" '34 roadster or a "ravine find" '53 ragtop frame & body - the thrill will be same for them as it has been for many of us. (I'm hoping this will still be happening??) And they can thank the hoarders and the "not for salers" for those thrills. 2cents. . . . .

I knew a guy up in Maine, probably 75 years old, who had EVERY vehicle he ever owned in his back yard. When they were junk, he got a new one and the junker was parked next the last one. And so on. He lived on a farm up in the hills. I doubt anyone but his neighbors were aware of the cars. But none were unique, valuable or hotrod-able. He paid for them, so he kept them. Some were used for parts if they'd fit on a newer car. Sad. And unsightly. And probably a subdivision for*****s and other varmits.

On the other hand, my 37 was owned by the same family. The story goes that after Granpa died, Grandma used it for awhile. Then it was mostly parked and driven infrequently. When she died it got passed down to the kids and (if I can believe the story by the guy who sold it to me) to him. He had a half-dozen family cars like this. He was selling them to finance his daughter's college education. So he says... I was like the 3rd owner of a car that had been in his family since 37. And it still ran. Gary

I've got stuff that I've decided I might sell, but by the time you show it to 8 or 10 people that offer you about 1/2 of what you gave for it in the 60's/70's the luster kind of wears off of the deal.

Well it's either 7 cars or 7 women. I like a little change thru the week, and there's NO WAY I could afford 7 women.

Today's hoarder, tomorrow's parts source........Water the seed Daniel-san.......do not poison the soil with acidic sentiment......defend the hoarders right to hoarde with all your might.

During the wintertime, an ant was living off the grain that he had stored up for himself during the summer. The cricket came to the ant and asked him to share some of his grain. The ant said to the cricket, 'And what were you doing all summer long, since you weren't gathering grain to eat?' The cricket replied, 'Because I was busy singing I didn't have time for the harvest.' The ant laughed at the cricket's reply, and hid his heaps of grain deeper in the ground. 'Since you sang like a fool in the summer,' said the ant, 'you better be prepared to dance the winter away!'

...one day I'll have a barn full of cars.

  22. I get the message here Torque Tube, very clear.

I also think it is good that people have this stuff holed up and stored because if all this stuff was out there for sale, the prices would come down and our precious original steel would be of lower value. Also the weirder stuff wasn't worth anything years ago, everyone wanted Fords.

Just imagine a car show full of Deuces, Model A's and T's, all powered by Small Block Chevies . . . Oh wait that's happening now.

I know many people who have at least 1 or 2 doable projects who never touch them.

They think that they are hotrodders or basically like us because they posses old parts/cars like us. They can pass a car show and tell their fried next to them that he/she shares the same compassion for cars and fantasies about working on them. Basically phsycologically filling a need they think they need to have and belong.

  25. I help a couple of neighborhood kids with their bikes and little motorized toys... They see my old Schwinn and my CB750 in the garage collecting dust and say "you wanna sell that!?!"... I know these kids don't have the money to buy any of them if even If took 10% of what they are worth, so I say "no"... I know they have no desire to actually keep them, they just want to buy them, ride them once and then sell them to buy a better modern pit bike or buy video games...

I imagine that the hoarders see the same thing when it comes to bigger toys... If the kid offered a fair price and I saw a wad of bills, I might sell one... but until then, I cut to the chase and say no.

Is this is what is taught in school these days..."GIVE it to me...???" and "Share the wealth..!!!"

    BULLSHIT...

WORK for what you want...handouts are for imbeciles...without working for something you want...it'll have no meaning to you in a short while...

And 'share the wealth'...??? This country was built on being able to acquire wealth...why the hell should anyone share what they've worked for...???

So when you go to the bank and want to get a mortgage you borrow from him. Or maybe he is a large investor/stockholder in your company? Better then borrowing from china.

im going to qualify my following statement with this..."I didnt read all of the replies"

1 thought i had is..how old is the horder?...old enough to have gone thru the depression? or a child of that era?

save save save everything 'casue you never know whan you'll need it,,could play a role here

2nd thought is..sometimes family and responsibilities get in the way of dreams..than hopefully one day you can get back to it..that is if your not pushing up daisies

this lame subject comes up once a week here.

for those of you who do not understand someone wanting to keep a car that will probably never be built or driven no explanation would make you understand.

there was a post a while back where a guy showed a picture of what must have been 20 49-54 chevys lined up out in a field. all just worn out and unrestored. I'd love to have that lineup of cars...

I think people who don't want a bunch of old cars and junk around are weird. I figure those people are the one's with one or 2 running cars that they bought or had built in a nice clean garage with painted floors.

...everybody here should save thier replies for when this same subject comes up next week, then you can just cut and paste
