So after lunch today I got called in to my bosses office and informed that since the companies workload was no longer needed, my services would no longer be required. If you've ever been in a situation like that, you have a million questions that start firing in the back of your head.... What am I going to do for money? How long will my savings last? Where the hell am I going to get another job?

So I drove home with the intent of hiding under my bed, curling up into a fetal position and panicking. However, as I walked through my garage, I p***ed my breaker bar and my 50 Plymouth. So I put the car up on jacks, pulled off the wheel, removed the upper control arm, broke the tie rods loose.... all the while, not panicking, not even thinking about my situation, but just engrossing myself in my work. It kind of brought me back down from the edge. I did manage to file for unemployment and register for the state mandated "job search engine" though.

So if any of you need an electrical engineer, just let me know. I'll be in the garage.

    John

Sorry to hear. Good luck with the front end job, things like that help to keep the grey cells happy.

Good luck with the job search

Lost one this summer, offer in hand less than 60 days later.

The key thing is to contact everyone you know, revive your personal network and don't ask any of them if they're hiring. Ask them to provide a reference. If they have an opening they'll mention it, if not, they'll start working to help you out. Doors close so better ones can be opened.

Spend about 4 hours a day doing be a professional job hunter. The rest of the time, do something you love. This will help you stay sane.

Been through this twice now. You being an electrical engineer ***ures that there is work out there, but more than likely it will require a move on your part. Keep your head up:)

What stimulus package? I've been technically unemployed over a year but started my own small business in April and am working on getting the service truck together while business is still slow, I'll be ready to go full bore by the spring when my business really picks up. I specialize in maintenance and repair of trucks and tractors/heavy equipment and do performance automotive and paint and body on the side.

Got a layoff coming Nov 1st. I've never in my life relied on any ***istance from the Government. Hang in there man, things always have a way of working themselves out.

Good on you for keeping the good a***ude. You've got the right a***ude and that's half the battle. Keep your chin up. Funny how messing with old cars is so much cheaper and more productive than a the******. Good luck finding something new.

if you can now is one of the best times to be in school. my mother works at the university of wa. and there is really nothing waiting for the newly graduated students because they lack "work history" that is one advantage someone your age has.
