Anybody know of a source for 13/16" 36 spline shaft? There are tons of sources for steering couplers, but not one for shafts. I need one about 9" long, splined on one end only, for my ol' front engine dragster. Thanks -Mike

I've emailed their tech dept guy, and guys at Flamming River, Ididit and several others. They don't even have any suggestions. Guess I could have one made. Thanks anyway. -Mike

  3. Before you go to the expense of having one made, take a tour through the junkyard and find some 13/16" shafts.

Some of the pickups should have such shafts.

I've seen rag joints on splined seering shafts.
These were held on with strong tack welds and it wouldn't be hard to get the joint off and the splines cleaned up so you could use them.

Years ago I wanted to have a shaft splined - I called all the "pro" companies - Borgeson, etc - none of them would spline my shaft - so I ended up doign it myself (with the help of a buddy's dad and his vertical mill) - point being - it's not rocket science - anyone with some patience and a friend with a mill is all you need.

Also - couldn't you take apart a steering column and use the splined shaft from there?

  5. Yeah, I think if you look through the catalogs from Borgeson or Flaming River, and find out which stock applications had the 13/16" 36 spline, then you could just go to the junkyard and pull a column out of a car or truck with that size shaft, and then maybe use the splined end as is and turn down the other end to 3/4" and weld it to a standard 3/4" u-joint or turn it down and turn it and mill two flats on it to turn it into a Double D shaft that's easy to find u-joints or couplers for.

You might check with Berg or Sterling Industries (SI), they sell all kinds of shafting, bearings, couplers, splined shafts etc. for industrial stuff.

I think the only common factory use of that spline was on the stub shaft coming out of GM power steering boxes in the 60s-70s. might find a short piece of that shaft as part of a lift kit for 70s chevy 4x4 pickups

You are right on squirrel! Thats the only place to get that size spline- the steering box of a 60s70s gm power unit, or a Jeep CJ. The column shaft in everything is 3/4. I might just cut the stub end off a one of those boxes, and weld it to a shaft for the right length. Thanks guys for your input.

the stub on power box has a hole thru the middle, as it's part of the steering control valve.

also make sure what year box you use, the spline got smaller around 1977
