Unrelated, but I l read something about campgrounds where people wrap chicken wire around their parked cars. Porcupines LOVE rubber. Tires, hoses... whatever they can reach.

Thanks again guys, for all the replies! I went back through each reply and I was very struck by the info provided by 5window. (The 17th response, I believe. The link is absolutely worth a read.) In short, some detailed evaluations have indicated the critters are no more attracted to soy than anything else. The concept of soy in the insulation attracting critters may be largely an urban myth.
I am always surprised when people buy into a theory based on limited information, but I am particularly surprised when that someone is me !!!!! I am now not that inclined to look for soy free wiring after all. However, I will try to improve my pest control practices, per your many suggestions. I will update if I learn anything significant. As always, many thanks to all !

I learned from experience the little********s love Toyota wiring. On two separate occasions I developed a miss, only to discover they'd chewed through a coil wire.

I tried the Fresh Cab stuff, and it seemed to work. But man, is it pungent, especially for the first few weeks. I put a single packet under the hood. Not as bad as mothballs, but I would hardly call the smell that leeched into my vehicle's cab "fresh."

I then installed one of those ultrasonic gizmos. Some say they are snake oil, but I haven't had a rodent issue since. Knock wood. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Odd thing is/was, while rodent-wire-munching has always been a problem(always more upholstery than wiring, whether in car or under hood), it seemed to get seriously outta hand when the soy-wiring became prevalent. I had read/heard of a serious increase in that damage, didn't know why, until yrs later, when it seemed that was the major change. IDK. The ancient version - cloth n tar-impregnated cloth covered wiring wasn't damaged so much. Don't know about the hi-temp-resistant silicone(?) stuff now, but I've had mouskie-chomping damage on my '04 n later stuff. Don't think food-supply has much to do w/it, but I am gonna start providing free peanutbutter&anice on a can over antifreeze in a bucket, for the damned things. Just gotta make it cat-accessible-proof.
