I wonder if the tubing could be capped on one end , then packed full of fine sand then capped. Then put into a lathe and have a aluminum wheel pressing against the tubing to form the rib ? Probably need a support wheel on the backside to keep from bending the exhaust tubing .

Or make a dull wheel for a pipe cutter like someone suggested. Mount the pipe cutter on the tool post on a lathe , drop in the tubing . Set the thread pitch on the gear setting , tighten up the cutter and turn on the lathe .

Yup, I ruined my pipe cutter trying this, It didn't work. I dulled the hell out of it and it still cut the pipe before it would put ribs in it

Thank You for directing me to the other thread . I think a dull pointed wheel could be made to press onto a roller bearing or a needle bearing . That might form a rounder bend ? Used in a holder like the one You made for the roller bearing .

maybe, I gave up messing with it when I couldn't repeat what I had done already a second time.. I think Tucks press and die idea has some merit, we are all holding our breath waiting...

I still say hydro forming is the way to go.

ok I just made a steel sleeve that I pressed on the bearing in my lathe tool. I had a small radiused point on it about .080 larger that the outside diameter, I put a pc of tubing in my lathe and the point wore down and flattened out without doing anything to the pipe. granted the pipe I was trying to rib was stainless and maybe that is why, now I am really done messing with this...

I might be wrong, but it seems like an exhaust pipe bender is able to make crimps. You might see if that's possible.

are you saying to put hydraulic oil under pressure inside the pipe and expand the diameter into a female die? man I think something like that may take more pressure than I would care to mess with... that female die would have to be 2 pcs so you could get the pipe out. maybe I don't understand...

yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Hydro forming is used for making frame rails and lots of things by the auto manufacturers.
    It’s amazing.

  13. These Radiator pipes were done with a dull pipe cutter on Stainless Steel (exhaust Tube)

  14. Chris, could this be fabbed with a 3D printer?

Maybe in 6" long segments, "welded" together to get the desired length?

Maybe scan a corrugated radiator hose with correct ID to nail down the dimensions?

Just a thought while Momma's watching another Hallmark Christmas movie.

I did some googling just now and came up with a site called bare knuckle performance who sells mild steel and SS up to 2 inch diameter. I didn’t dig deep as I’m heading to bed, but the pics of the the pipes they showed were around 100 bucks for 18-24 inches I’d guess and assume that was 1-3/4 Mild steel.
    Might be worth looking into.

Yeah, we were discussing it offline. I think it's better than nothing, however, the originals had a more pronounced radius. I know, beggars can't be choosey.

  22. They got back to me but didn't say if they had anything. Asked what material and size I was looking for. Probably means they have limited supply. I replied back with mild steel and either 1 3/4" or 2" so we will see what they say.

Sorry about that, I remembered reading this thread and was googling and just came to the last page to reply.

  29. No worries. I was quoting just to say that I had emailed them so we didn't inundate them with a bunch of people asking the same questions. LOL
