Anyone use a spacer between the torque tube and transmission to bring the engine a little further forward to clear the fire wall on an A V8 build? I saw a 1/2 inch one on e bay a while ago, and wonder if it would work. Thanks

So are you saying you would end up with 1/2" less engagement on the spline? That don't sound so good.

Yea I know, but I guess some people use them. I saw one on a build here that has one. I haven't set the engine and trans in yet to see where they'll end up.

  4. Why would you need this adapter for? Set your engine, set your rear end and shorten driveshaft and torque tube to suit..

I guess to get a little more room between the fire wall and engine with the stock rear and torque tube. I saw one on a build, and another for sale, so I was wondering if anyone here has used one, and if it worked.

I made one recently. It's for the situation where you have a stock a model rear and torque tube already in the car and aren't replacing it. I measured everything carefully and found the stock spline sticks through the coupler by half an inch in it's stock position, so the spacer doesn't reduce the contact area at all. It gives you the little bit if extra room you need at the firewall to fit the fuel pump and stand on a flathead in a very neat way.

We kept the stock Model A rear and torque tube with an 8BA and did have to trim the bottom flangeof the firewall where the floorboard sits. I don't think 1/2" would have solved it but maybe the OP is using a 49 ab.
Also keep in mind that spline moves in and out as the rear suspension travels and also under acceleration and hard braking. I think that's why there's some additional spline length to factor that in.
We rotated the fuel pump for clearance.

Yea, I have a 59 ab for it and I'm going to measure everything like lowsquire did. Then I'll make one and see if it will work. It would be nice not to have to cut the fire wall, and I have the machines to make one.

If you space the engine trans forward a half inch what happens to you fan to radiator clearance. I have my flathead and 39 trans located off the stock model a torque tube and I will have to trim a little bit of the flange like ctav8. Everything seams to be working out on mine but I'm am not finished yet

Yes, what you gain between the engine and firewall, you lose in the front. But I'd rather deal with that than cutting the firewall. I made one today, it's just under 1/2 inch, next week I'll put it together, and see how it fits when it's hooked up to the torque tube.
