Just to show that I ain't been slackin lately here are some pics of what I have been up too. First is the reason why no one screws around with old chevy trucks. Everything you see on the inside of the door here is wood! The skins are held on by a bunch of little finish nails. I am repalcing all of the nails with stainless screws. The old nails were starting to pull out. I am replacing most of the screws with stainless ones too. I don't know what they treated wood with back then, but it works! The wood is in good shape but some of the screws have rusted the threads off and started pulling out. I was lucky to find this truck in this good of shape. If the wood was gone I'd be messing with a ford too. Lukester eat your heart out!
I have also been doing a little body work. I pretty much have the ass end done and in primer. It needs touched up here and there but I will screw with that after I get the cab in primer too. There is no support on the back of the door skins so I am PORing the back side and I am going to go ahead and get my insulation and stuff on there. I also have some epoxy paint that I am going to seal all the wood up with. I figure I need to do this first because anything I do the the back side will show up on the bodywork on the outside. Now here is the money shot!
i still love that truck holmes. you going to the Pile Up again this fall?? maybe you'll have her all done and painted by then?? what ya thinkin for a paint job?? i hope it's something befitting this trucks wild looks, like some crazy candies and flakes. this is one of my favorite HAMB vehicles because it is so creative and because i just LOVE screwing around with the cool shapes of old cars and making things that were never ment to be, from those shapes. keep it up... That's looking great! On the wood, DON'T attempt to seal it up completely, because it needs to "breathe" somewhere or it will dry rot. It will gt moisture in and out of it no matter how hard you try to seal it and if the moisture has no way to get out it will rot much faster than if you left it bare. Witness a picket fence, painted white on both sides doesn't last nearly as long as the wood frame house siding that's only painted on the outside and allowed to breathe on the inside. I only varnish the top side of my truck bed for this reason and have no rot problems and it's been over a decade with the rear tires throwing everything on the road on the bottom side of the bare wood.
I am not doing anything too crazy paint wise. It is going to be PPG Big League Blue. I am just going to shoot single stage paint so it is easily touched up. It ought to look pretty wild with the white frame and all. The firewall is going to be white too. I have a little model that is those colors and it looks pretty cool. I live out in the country, so it would be kind of silly to go all crazy just to have it all chipped up and not being able to touch it up. I hope to have it all painted in a month or so. It will probably lack interior till next winter. I'm going to take it and have it done most likely, if I can save up some more money. I still need to buy my wheels and tires. Dr J, that is good to know. Perhaps I need to reconsider my plan.
I always like seeing pics off your truck, PlowBoy! It's gonna be a real sharp ride, when you're done.
I hear what you're saying about the wood. My Morris Eight doors are built on it, which is why I decided not to try and modify them. The skins are screwed, nailed, tack welded brazed and folded round the wood: so they ain't coming apart easily! I pulled some bits of wood out of the bodywork though, and it is hard and tough as iron, even though it's seventy years old!!!!!
That truck is way cool! It's got such a unique look and personality to it, that it will always stand out and be remembered...long after more garden variety rods have come and gone and been forgotten! A TRUE custom rod!
Love it still..i'll certainly never forget the "space truck"....cant wait to see it in paint with the wheels and tyres all sorted...!1 AWESOME! cheers MAIKI
do you have a pic of the truck as a whole? not just the cab and bed? I'm fairly new and haven't seen it before! bad ass work though!!!!
I can't belive you arn't restoring back to stock after seeing what the one went for at Berret Jackson! The bed looks GREAT. And I know what you mean about allthe wood and little nails. I restored a 32 chevy moredoor once. So have you come to conclusion on the wheels yet?
I am still going with the Radirs for sure. I am still undecided about tires. I WAS thinking Coker www's 6.40/15's in front with L-78/15's in the back. I got to remembering that post with the japanese A and the tires it had on it. I really dig the 3 stripe tires on the rear but the closest I can come on the front in 15's are a 1 inch whitewall or a whitewall/redline dual stripe. I would hate to spend the money on the tires get them mounted and have them look like shit.
lookin good, as far as the triple whites' i think some one mentioned on the grinding www post a while back that they had a machine, jig whatever ever you want to call it. for cutting them i would think about hollaring at them and see if they could just cut you some triple lines ? tim
Coker sells those triple whites check their catalog or look up the old post of that car, I posted what they were.
Thanks Doc, but I checked it all out already. That is where I learned they don't hve a "matching" tire for the front. That is why I would have to go to the 1 incher or the whitewall redline combo.
