Well, the big day came and it was 100 degrees, but when you have loyal friends, they still show up. The crew is Brent McMullin, (black shirt),his Son Tyler, and Brent's Brother Kelly, all body and paint guys and masters of their trade. Brent and I have been working on projects together for around 25 years, and it's great to see a Father and Son work in unison like these two. Most of the work was done outside, under a metal canopy. The next session will get the door glass, handles and hardware installed, and the steps in place. I am excited, with that big 460, behind the hood (not under it), I will make a swift delivery of the Spalding to So Cal ! That is a sweet truck. I love COEs. It would look great with a ramp bed towing around a roadster / track racer.

Frenchtown, When I decided that I wanted a COE, my first thoughts were of a flatbed or ramp truck. About that time a customer gave me (2) bread trucks that were used in the movie, "The Hunted" with Tommy Lee Jones. My first thoughts were to strip the Grumman box off of one, but I decided to see how it would work out as a cargo van. Here in Oregon, we get a lot of rain, and with the removable rack to haul a car, it will be dual use for hauling parts to get sandblasted, and painted. It will be much more secure, when going to swap meets, and other events. I started this project with a 48 cab, but the 53, is working out better. P1010001.JPG

    Hey Marty,
    A) It looks to me like the panels/gaps on that great big COE fit a whole lot better than the ones on my '56 F-100. Ford certainly didn't make them fit that well in the first place (I well know). Congrats to all who made it work!
    B) Being from greater Hollywoodland (home of Tommy Ivo, among many others) here's the perfect solution to the ramp vs. box quandry for your hauler: Plexiglas. Yea. That's the ticket. What it really needs is see-through sides, so everyone can appreciate your good-looking cargo...
    Cheers, Pat G.

    MISSING LINK
Thanks to a call to Don Zig Magnetos, who gave me Hoyt Wallace's name and number in Missouri, here is finally a good photo of the one crucial part I am missing to complete the Wayne 12 Port engine for my car:

    TachDriveAssy.jpg
This is the GMC/Chev Tach Drive Adapter supposedly made by Stewart-Warner, and listed in the Wayne catalog. Hoyt said he got this one on eBay for $300 (after passing on one earlier one listed for $1000). It's obviously N.O.S. since it has no drive gear, nor a hole for a set-pin. I have been looking on eBay, the H.A.M.B., and several other sites for years, and haven't found one. I showed one modified version earlier.

Here's a look at this adapter (with drive gear added to shank) installed in Hoyt's 261 Wayne-head Chevy in his '32 Ford roadster. He said he bought the head, 5-carb intake, and all other parts new from Bob Toros in about 1955, but didn't build the engine (and car) until recently. The Vertex mag was modified by Joe Anderson at Zig Magnetos with the 2-tang "dog drive" needed to fit in the S-W adapter. Hoyt says he's driven it cross-country to Inliners meets and elsewhere with no problems.

    Wayne-ChevyMag.JPG
Hoyt also emailed me a couple pages from a "Toros Enginering" catalog from the mid-'50s, as well as one from an earlier Wayne catalog that not only shows the (unnamed) Spalding ignition, but also the Stewart-Warner tach and drive combination, clearly showing one of these "adapters."
For some reason I couldn't get the catalog page to print here.
But if you by any chance have, or knows someone else who actually has, one of these "adapters" I would certainly like to acquire it--one way or another (legally of course)--to complete my engine. Anybody?

    Thanks, Pat Ganahl

I can't help you with obtaining the drive Pat but I can vouch for Hoyt driving the roadster in a driving rainstorm back from the Wright / Pat Air museum to the Inliners convention in Dayton. The Wayne roadster performed flawlessly while spewing 12 ft high rooster tails down I-75 (which eventually drowned my Willys coupe).

    I'm sure Hoyt won't mind - Here's a very short video of his 12 port 32 roadster.

Thought I'd add this to keep the inliner momentum going :)

I took a week off and went to Bonneville for the World of Speed USFRA Meet. To help Jim Lindsay with the Roadster I built him 3 years ago. In some earlier posts I mentioned that I made some modifications to fit the new Don Ferguson prepared, ARDUN powerplant. The salt and weather conditions were perfect, and in 2 runs, Jim collected a Red Hat from the HAMB's own Dan Warner. His first run was 220.8, and his average for the record was 218.375. In the last photo, right to left, is Jim, Ernie Martin, Me, Don Ferguson, Jerry Stauffer, and Dan Warner. Crew members not shown, All Rossback and Bob Lick, they were busy breaking down the pit camp. Also, the "Tall Cool One" and his Wife Anna, are on their way north with the Wayne engine in the back of his 56 F-100, scheduled for delivery this Friday ! Watch for updates. Good to see this and congrats to all involved. We were less fortunate at Speedweek - too rough a track for us to solve. Patiently waiting for more on Pat's roadster.

Well, yesterday was a big day, Pat and his Wife Anna arrived from their 1000 mi journey to deliver the engine. A few of my buddies showed up to help unload it, what a masterpiece, and it looks right at home sitting in front of the car, we will set it in the chassis this week.
We got one of my videos on youtube of Jim Lindsay's roadster, if you care to hear it.

Today, I pulled the body and removed the set-up engine in preparation for tomorrow, when we install the Wayne Equipped Beauty ! the Cyclone adapter got quick cycle through the bead blaster, to brighten it up to match the engine. IMG_0705.JPG IMG_0707.JPG IMG_0706.JPG

Marty, Pardon my innate nosiness, but what's with all the meat cleavers hanging in the background? Former life as a butcher?

I recently acquired one of those Cyclone adaptors down here in NZ. It's been a wall hanging since the 50's so I figured it's time it got used. It amazes me what odd parts found their way down here back in the day.

I can't wait to see that Wayne engine in place, what a work of art!

Funny you should ask about those cleavers. I have a u-tube video that I can't post here, but if you search my name and click on videos, you will see. And no, I was never a butcher.
