Good thing, you only have to bend one pipe!

If these old eyes can make it out, it appears the pipe is in 3 pieces. Your pretty smart and a hell of a fabricator, I bet you'll figure out how they did it originally. For my 2 cents..... Heat and shrink one side & see it it will come around.

I figured you would do it yourself with the heat and shrink method. Might be fun?!

I am going to try to get it done professionally, but if not, I will tackle it. My fear is that it will be wrinkled like me !

I just ordered some 3-1/2" X 7" centerline radius u-bends, that might be the ticket.

That's what I'd do, at least at the back. The long curve might be a bit of a challenge but, if you support it at each end and gently push it down in the middle you might be able to accomplish that too.

For a consistent radius it should be supported in two places (little 'v's) and pressed on in two places (big 'V's) so the bending moment is constant between the span between the big Vs. Then add the sharper wrap-around at the back.

    Marty,
back in the early 90's I made some curved megaphones for a pair of 512 Ferraris that I built. I rolled the cones pretty much the same way that you did and then capped and sand packed them. Used a big rosebud tipped propane torch and eased the curve into them. I ended up having to mount the cones on the post of the basketball hoop (its an Indiana thing ;)) out back of the shop to bend them as I was making enough heat in the shop that it was setting off the fire alarm.

  11. Why not just use a shrinking disc along one side of the tube to bend it?
Keep heating & shrinking until you achieve the desired curvature.

    Roo,
That's some nice work ! Did that motorcycle gas tank supply enough fuel for the long races ?

  13. I've gone through kind of the same treatment on my A Roadster. Built 2 different length Cones for Cyl offset with matching o.d. on each end then into a shicane to get through the splash apron in same spot on each side. Some kind of Fun Eh? This silly thing will be full fendered if I ever get back to it.

While Pat and I have been figuring out how to get a pipe done properly, my mind has wondered into the future, but first we have to travel back a few years. I started a project for a friend of mine, it was to be a vintage Supermodified, the sliced and diced "T" coupe pictured here. I built the frame as 95' wheelbase version of one of my standard Track Roadsters. My friend decided to work on another project, and we struck a deal, and I now own the the coupe, along with some extra parts. Now that Pat's project is in the final stages, I will be building another Flathead powered Track Roadster for a buddy on the east coast. I have decided to build a roadster for myself, using the chassis components from the coupe, by stretching the rear frame section. I will also use the Halibrand Champ rear axle, front axle and wishbones, spindles, and front hubs. My first Track Roadster was slated for a track nose, and I ended up using a stock "T" grille. My new one will have a track nose, as I just made a deal on the mold and the nose pictured. My old friend, the late Rolla Vollstedt,(who built and raced everything from Roadsters to Indy Cars) had a real nice aluminum nose built by one of his former fabricators, and this mold was taken off of that one. It will be a better fit, for the 23-25 body than the narrow cowl on Pat's car. I am planning on using a 283 Chevy and a 4 speed. Well, I finally got a pipe rolled. After transferring the arc of the bend to cardboard, I determined the the location for the cut on the pipe, to make the jog by rotating the joint 180 degrees. It looks like the front of the pipe needs to be a bit shorter, to get the curve that wraps around the body, a little tighter. This has been one of the most difficult parts of this build, just finding a business that would make a part to my specs. Finally some progress ! This has really been a fun build to watch and one you keep hoping to see the updates on. Many people will look at the car and never realize the details you are agonizing over , but when this thing is completed and YOU are happy with the result it will be amazing, and well worth all your effort.

Yep. It' a thrill when I log on and see the little red light on in the top corner and my notifications take me here. Thanks for the effort to share. That pipe is beautiful.

Curious, what did the shop use to form the tube?

Thanks for the replies, the shop that rolled the tube was Albina Pipe Bending, about 45 minutes away. They did all of the tube bending on the Peterson Museum, when it was renovated a while back.

It's always satisfying to work for and with people who are detail oriented. One of my past projects came back yesterday, Lonnie Gilbertson brought his 55 Gasser for some minor work. Because Pat is like Lonnie, (details to the 9's) that's why I am doing it the best I can. The first pic is the beginning of the '55, with Lonnie and I cutting the snout off of the frame. Looks typical detail wise for a two time AMBR winner's ride.

Some progress today. My struggle with the pipe is nearly over, the rear mount is next and then time to finish the welding. The side nerfs will be next ! IMG_0958.JPG IMG_0959.JPG IMG_0961.JPG IMG_0962.JPG IMG_0963.JPG
