I was talking to grandpa the other day about how everyone on the Fordbarn seems to be leaving the Champion H10's for NGK's. He and I both have been fouling out many sets. I'm not wanting a debate on Champion vs. NGK!!! Anyway, when I was younger, dad had an old Lawn Boy mower that had a plug that glowed every time the plug fired. I always that how cool that was. Well, grandpa said he remembered buying them for his hot rods. Is there still such a thing? Just for kicks and giggles I'd like to have some for my flatty... In my searches, all I find are "glow plugs" for diesels... EDIt: these weren't overly annoying like something you'd see on a modern rice burner fart can car......
the white porcelain/ceramic area.... edit: with most plug wire boots, you wouldn't be able to see them light up....but on a flatty with the old style clips you could...
I think I remeber seeing some, just at a swap meet or something. Basically, it's like a spark checker tool that goes between the plug and the wire where you can see the spark, but it was built into the plug. Seems to me it would weaken the spark, but might look neat on an open hood car cruising the main drag at night.
Exactly! How cool would it be on a hoodless flatty.......open headers and idling low......seeing each one hit......the ones I'm talking about were orange in flavor I emailed dad to check the brand........shoot, I think that plug is still in the lawn boy.....that makes it being used for almost 20 years... Being that this plug was in a lawn boy, it would have to cross with a CJ14- which is used in mowers, weedeaters, chainsaws, etc. Well, I'm running CJ14's in an 8N tractor with no problems. AND since CHampion H10's are for lawn mower applications........I think that company would have made them too.....dunno....
You could just place neon bulbs near the plug wires, and they will light up orange. I don't have a part # or pic, but they are about 1/2" longx 1/4" dia. Radio shack has them cheap. Some ignition testers have them in the handle,to see what I mean.Sparky
This is a BEACON LIGHT Spark Plug from the 1930's, always wondered what a V-16 Caddy would look like at night with a set of these. The spark intensifiers of that time would do the same thing, little gl*** bead like add on about the size of a small g****.
those are pretty cool......yes, they would look good firing in a v16...... blown49.......that's what they put them on but they look like something for a minitruck!
Keep checking Harley stuff. I know I've seen little blinky things for bikes that go between the plug and wire.
Found'em: http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=EC4E76F3-2341-4EFE-A986-BA15A8492286&search=spark%20plug%20blink&store=All&page=1
those are fairly neat but the ones I'm talking about look just like a normal plug.....you'd NEVER know they did that until you saw one installed and lit up....... thanks!
Id been kicking the light up harley plug idea around for some time. The bike in 'Harley davidson & the Marlboro" had some light up diodes in the plug wires. Always thought it would be sweet on a rod as well. Finally going to have something with an open hood, so might be an idea. Think i'll p*** on the neons though!
Hey I bought a set of those a few years ago for my car! This was before the neon tubes. I walked into a bike shop and asked for a set of "Sparky Arcys" they corrected me and told me they were lazer nodes. Mine were from http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=Harley&ci=2383 but they also make blue and amber. Simple and look kinda vintage. You just cut the plug wire in two and screw the wire into each end. I run them on my coil wires since I have a dual coil set up, looks good and is kinda nice when you have engine probs to see if you have spark!
Ok, ok, I hated cutting gr*** as much as the rest of ya.......but I'm surely not THE only one that remembers plugs that glow ......BTT I really want some......
I remember seeing something on here a while ago that was similar to what you are describing. It was called colortune. Basically a spark plug with a gl*** viewing window around the insulator so you could see what color the gas was burning. You could tell if you were rich or lean by comparing the color to a chart that came with it. Here's the link to the original thread and to a place online that has them... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104136&highlight=colortune http://www.international-auto.com/index.cfm/fa/p/pid/3448/sc/8145
no, it was actually bright enough to see in the day time.... so, smarty pants, here's a pic i found.......
On a two stroke, it glowed continuously...I ***ume on a 4 stroke v8, at idle, you could see the individual ones......
