  1. I'm always trying to help, so:
THIS is an example of a fire that your hand-held extinguisher probably won't have much of an effect upon...

  2. Hi Kids,

    Really digging this post!

Whilst its true that Halon entinguishers are illegal (have been here since 1994) there is a replacement known as Halotron I which is equally as good if not better then Halon. When people speak of Halon systems they are usually refering to Halotron as opposed to the older Halon used in the system. We have two m***ive, independant and redundant Halontron I systems we use to protect our data centre here at work. Whilst ours are static installations, they are also available in portable extinguisher versions as well:

Mind you they are not cheap at $400 for a 11lb version.

  3. CO2 extinquishers are good too. I prefer them to chemical. But will take what is available in a pinch.

Damn! It sounds like you should have an extinguisher attached to your belt!

I'm sure most of ya'll know this, but if it helps one person it is worth it. If you have a fire in your carb from a backfire, immediately try to start the engine again. It will **** the fire in the engine and be fine.

Sometimes that seperates the men from the boys. I think it looks great! I have a chrome one in all my cars. I never thought of it as ricey, my dad had a chrome one in his A since the '60's.

The one thing I couldn't believe, and I'm sure you'll agree, I looked on ebay and they actually sell FAKE chrome fire extinguishers! They don't have a charge! and won't take a charge! WTF??? How can you put that in your car? I could just picture somebody having a real fire, and instead of getting the hell out of the car, they're fumbling around for the fire extinguisher they know they have, either not realizing or not remembering it's phony.

While we're talking about putting out fires ,the stuff we use to put out car fires is WATER. I mean we use big hoses at 100 psi but water does the trick for everything but pools of flammable liquids. For small engine fires where there is no spilled fuel ,water will put it out with little or no damage. If you have an interior fire with seats and carpet burning water will "slay the dragon"

If the fire is big CALL 911! If it's inside the garage and getting away from you GET OUT and call 911. It only takes a small whiff of smoke to kill you. Seat upholstery foam gives off Poisonous Hydrogen Cyanide gas a**** other nasties.

Oh, also mount your fire extinguisher for your shop near the door. You should never have to go past the fire to get the extinguisher. The extinguisher should be between you and the fire.

    BE SAFE!!!!

Part of your inspection of the fire extinguisher should be to weigh the bottle. You can find the weight on the label, aircraft bottles are weighed every 6 months, recharged at 6 years and hydro tested or replaced at 12 years under most inspection programs.Halon is the ****,it is heavier than air and displaces oxygen as it settles.
