Recogised that as the Richard Bolster special. Unfortunately the Hemmings weblink didn't work for me, but there is some detail on the car from when it was last sold. https://cars.bonhams.com/auction/26...ard-bolster-special-monoposto-chassis-no-rb1/ BTW, loved the photo of the car in the 'rotunda' at the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) in London's Pal Mall. This is a stunningly beautiful building inside if you can wangle/blag a visit -I don't think an oily fingered peasant such as myself would be invited to become a member even if I suddenly became a gazillionaire
I posted these pics a while ago ... now I know (from Mark Bisset's 'primotipo' website) that it's a Bugatti chassis, a 1928 Type 37A Grand Prix, chassis number 37358. The event was the 1946 New South Wales Grand Prix, driver JE Murray. The car still exists and its restoration as a Bugatti was well underway in recent years. Another car from the 1946 New South Wales Grand Prix: Ford V8 Special driven by Alec Mildren. Blowing up the first photo to the maximum on the SLNSW website I could see that it's a Ford badge on the front and 'primotipo' confirms that. photos courtesy of ACP/CP, Mitchell Library and State Library of New South Wales
I saw this at the Portland Transmission Spring Classic today. Banger equipped, nicely finished and appointed. Hansome maroon and tan. Good body work
I have posted pics of these two cars before but here they are in the same race, the 1946 New South Wales Grand Prix at Bathurst. Frank Kleing's Hudson Special and Ted Gray in the Alfa Romeo-Ford Special. It seems that almost every car in this race was a 'special'. ACP/CP, Mitchell Library/State Library of New South Wales
1946 NSW GP at Bathurst ... on the bonnet: 'Conoulty's SPECIAL AUSTIN COMET' ('primotipo' tells me that it was Bill Conoulty and it was a DNF in the race) ACP/CP, Mitchell Library and State Library of New South Wales
I had found several pics of this Special on the State Library of Victoria website but there was little info to each pic and I didn't know what the car was: the Maybach Special, powered by a Maybach engine from a captured German scout car. To those who know (not me) it seems to be the most famous/important post-war Aussie Special. Built by Charlie Dean/Repco Research (Repco as in Repco-Brabham F1 world championship winner) and Ern Seeliger. (I have posted pics of Seeliger's own Special previously.) The car evolved over the years. Thanks to 'primotipo' once again; it has a ton of info on the Maybach: //primotipo.com/tag/maybach/ first pic by George Thomas at Rob Roy Hill Climb 1948; second pic is from a later Rob Roy; third pic is Stan Jones at Albert Park, Melbourne (1953?). (Stan was the father of F1 champion Alan Jones.)
Not long ago I posted a Feb 1960 Sports Car World (Oz) magazine feature on a Lotus clone; here'a a May 1958 SCW feature on another.
