I changed the Richmond 5 speed to a C4 in my 32 roadster. The Richmond speedo cable connection was on the passenger side and the C4 is on the drivers side. I bought a new drive gear and adapter for the C4 (trying to use the original speedo cable) but the speedo does not work. I'm thinking the end of the original cable is too small for the adapter and therefore not turning? Is that a logical explanation or could it be something else? Do they make a cable end fitting to correct? Im trying to not run a new cable because the car is upholstered and it will be a real fight to route ( plus I'm and old guy). Any thoughts?
I believe the drive gears are different between the manual and automatic. I bought a new gear for the C4 but I'll check it. Thanks for the reply.
Look on line or at a parts store at a c4 cable end and a Richmond speed cable and see if they are the same. If not have a custom cable made.
Ford speedometer driven gear pitch is opposite the side it comes in on. Left side the gear should have a right hand pitch, if it comes in on the right side it should be a left hand pitch. Check with nipple pointing away from you, the gears are usually marked with R or L, IE 16R or 16L. If you haven’t run it much it probably won’t have damaged the drive gear inside. As for the cable the square size should be from .100 to .104 some import cables are undersized and I’ve seen square sizes as small as .97 which will spin in a gear and not work.
