I need some advice, please. I will be getting the 3 hole Limeworks 16 inch Forty steering wheel for my Merc. I have the Speedway Nostalgia column, which I don't care for, but I'm running with what I got (hey, I'm cheap). I hate the slack in the hub and is not pretty on the eyes, Should I get a hub that welds on to the shaft? Is there a cover that I can buy that goes over the 3 hole hub to clean up the appearance or is this something I would need to fab myself? If so I will weld the quick disconnect hub I have now.

Gosh, if you can post some photos it would be easier to offer suggestions,
including ideas in addition to what you have stated.

There are several different types of removable steering wheel hubs. Look at the Speedway Racing Equipment website for a better idea. There is a Grant item that covers the hub, but not sure you can use it with a removable wheel.

basically I wanted to do away with the quick release hub without replacing the column and also make a taper from the back of the steering wheel to the column so it looks cleaner. I'll try and post some photos later. I didn't think it was necessary as I'm sure someone on here has done this already.

I have that same column. I had the same problem. I solved it by making a saw cut in the coupler in between the holes for the pin. Put a 1/4" bolt in place of the pin and tighten it up. This makes a clamp out of the coupler and tightens the wheel up on the shaft. It is no longer quick release but it's tight.

Thank you for your advice, that's a good idea. Then I would just need to refine the look of it, maybe just painting the hub would help.

Agreed, not a lot of options unless I weld it on the spline or do what jaw22 suggested.

I have the hex shaped one, no splines, and it is very sloppy. I have an old Superior custom steering wheel. I haven't done it yet but I made a round plate, 3/16 thick, and cut a 3/4 hole in the center. I was going to cut the hex part off and weld this on. Drill 3 holes for the wheel and find me a horn button to hide the bolts. That thing would drive me crazy as loose as it is.

Someone on here posted the use of a lamp shade to make a cover for the hub.

If you don't want the hub loose then use some red loctite on it.

I could just get the Limeworks 3 hole column and not be such a cheap asso_O

  16. I also had the Speedway column with the disconnect and also bought the quick release hub that you pull up a center ring from the backside. Looked the same, same # of male/female grooves but was just a hair off from fitting, Got out my hand file and in 15 minutes or less (your times may vary) I got it to slip on and lock. Now if I yank up hard on the wheel, it has a 16th or so slop up and down, but you don't know it when driving.

I bought that same unit. Did not like the slop on it. Gave feedback on Speedway’s site about the product and disappointed in the slop. Got a response essentially saying I should have expected rhe slop given the quick disconnect and then they never posted my negative feedback on the product. Might have saved the next guy the trouble.......
