Hi All, I don’t get to post on here much these days and this was last minute opportunity, but I will be able to attend speedweek today after 4 PM Sunday, and all day Monday. Any good advice? Here is what I have so far: Big hat, long pants, and tons of sunscreen with wraparound sunglasses and find/make shade. Get there at sunup on Monday. Set up around the mile - 1.5 mile marker Any must go eateries? Other hot rod shops/cool stuff that are must see in Salt lake area? I have seen a couple posts and hope to see some of the people/their cars that will be at speed week on the forum. **If anyone is going to be there and has a 30s - 60s Utah license plate I would like to buy it off of them, when I travel around the country for work my goal is to find an old license plate for every state I have visited to put up in the garage over the coupe!***
Are you renting a vehicle? I've heard rental companies in and around Salt Lake have restrictions about taking one of their vehicles on the Salt and they verify it bt GPS
For shade, a large golf umbrella is the best investment you'll make. Relatively cheap and extremely portable. This is the five footer I have and always keep behind the seat of the heap.....along with a cart umbrella holder that attaches to any lawn chair. You're covered - rain or shine.
When you are roaming the pits, ask racers if they need any help. We did that, and ended up getting to drive the chase vehicle down the salt! It provides a whole different perspective of the event compared to sitting in the spectator area
Have fun, be safe. LOTS of water. Also, it's not sea level, so even though the scenery and the event can take up all your attention, pay attention to your body. If you are short of breath, dizzy, feeling weird, seek help ASAP.
Buy a Tshirt or two from the racers. That is probably the only place you will ever get one and for some it means gas in the tank or a sit down dinner.
Not sure if your into Military history or not , if so check out Wendover USAF Base . Lots of unknown stuff took place there . It’s only 8800 acres .
The Mexican food place is Amazing, An around the corner from there, Is the Black/White bar in the trailer park, Iconic Must!!!
Streamline Custom is a cool shop to visit. They gave as a great tour when the Curmudgeons rolled through last year. Had some very cool HAMB friendly and non-HAMB friendly builds underway.
Hi All, Thank you for all the good info! My buddy and I arrived a couple hours after the incident on Sunday and the track was already shut down, I learned he was a legend among the salt flats. Condolences and prayers to his family and friends! We got a last-minute room at the nugget luckily and was able to catch a bunch of hot rods at the car show in the parking lot. Also ate at the staple ‘Metro’ Mexican diner with all of the pictures of the race cars on the wall, great food! I did this! First shirt I bought was from Kowalski speed shop that ended up being a few hours from me here in Pennsylvania, what are the chances? Small world, I will be stopping by there the next time I am in the area. Met some of the rolling bones guys out of NY and may go to their garage party in February they said I should make a trip out for. Very cool cars and knowledgeable guys, I learned some good info! we did this, before we left we ended up helping out with a random Arca series NASCAR yellow car parked at the very end of the track on Monday afternoon. Starter issues so we hung out for an hour until it was beyond fixing so we could help push the car in to the trailer. Got to sit in it, boy that tricky getting in and out! (Can’t show pictures here) Based on other required travel in the area we were able to pit stop at Kindig-It Design and say thanks again for signing my car when he was in PA a few weeks ago. Awesome showroom absolutely worth stopping when in Salt Lake and great people over there! Regarding the rental car, we’ll see what happens they didn’t say anything about the flats nor did I see anything in the short agreement… Pictures!:
