I picked up an axle with wide 5's and brake drums but somebody welded the spindles to it to make a trailer axle. I can score the welds and brake the spindles off no problem but I want to weld the area back up cause they got a little crazy with the amperage when they welded it and removed more metal then they added. Anybody have thoughts on welding on an axle. It's cast steel not iron right?

    Ford axles are forged steel.

Shouldn't have any trouble welding on forged. Anybody else have to do this?

I have done it to a 32. It was a cherry, mint axle, in mostly all original Henry paint, but they welded a huge chunk of steel on top center for a trailer swivel.

Blasted it clean after cutting that off, and it migged nice. Preheat would help a bit, as far as the edges where your weld meets the axle. I think it would blend in better, without leaving a slight valley at the weld line.
