I finally got around to adding more pages to my on-line land speed archive, which I've been neglecting. I've put up three pages of never-before-seen photos taken by Tom Carroll of Spirit of America and the team at Bonneville and in Wendover in August 1962. Here's the link: http://www.samuelhawley.com/lsr.html They're the pages marked "NEW!" Here's a sample:
To anyone who hasn't read Sam's book "Speed Duel", do yourself a favor and check it out. It was a hard one for me to put down. Read most of it on a road trip that included going to speed week about five years ago.
In the mid 1960's Breedlove's wife or ex-wife and daughter lived just up the street from me in Costa Mesa, CA., and we went to the same elementry school. At some point the school realized they had a celebrity on their hands and got Breedlove to give an "***embly" at the school. A film was shown and just as it ended Breedlove was swarmed by school kid's asking for his autograph. Breedlove was considered a God to 9 year old school kids. I've always liked to read about his salt flat exploits. The part of the film I remember most was the accident in the 3-wheel car, and Breedloves reaction of "I broke my race car!!!"
