Projects Spirit of South Dakota LSR lakester/rear enigine roadster

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tman, Dec 31, 2010.

  1. Friggin amazing!

  2. No more wood holding up the front rails! Got a couple more parts in, using tape to layout the uprights and diagonals. The PVC tubes represent the firebottles. This car is small enough space is a premium. Above the legs is a good place for them, hence my thinking on a Speed Demon or now Dauerheim and Bigelow type canopy. Sorry for the dark pictures, bad light here today!

I'm pretty sure that is a Todd's on the 608.

There is limits as to the height to width ratio he can do. We needed to cut ours down the lenght to narrow it.

Make sure you got someone small enough to be able to get in there and clean it. The inside is a dust magnet. We have to take ours off to clean the inside.

    You're looking good.

  4. So we are good with the midget stripper then?:D

Is the 608 the older wedge shaped car that was rebodied? Or a whole new car? Thanks for the tips.

  5. Got some measurements ready for Todd, been in touch with him, we will see what he can do with a canopy, thanks for your input gas pumper!

  6. Working on the rear helmet bars. close, this one is 1/2" off a good first try for a pierced tube

The 608 lakester uses one of Todds canopys just something he had laying around. For little money Todd would make a canopy to custom fit the car.

  9. Thanks Ron, Todd has some measurments in hand, we will see what he can come up with!

:Dgood luck finding one that does windows

Same chassis tag. Cut the front off, saved the middle, added to the back.
Rearanged the location of a lot of stuff. Mostly to get weighty stuff between the wheels instead of canterlievered out front and back.

We are still thinking about where 1% more mph is, twice. Two days in a row. How hard can thatbe?;)

Speed Demon guys said theirs is not a TODD'S. And they had a lot of issues with whoever built it for them.

I think the new shape had a lot to do with us getting the speed up this year. The old nose had never been over maybe 296. This one didn't go under 300. And drove well.

First unblown gas lakester to 300 on carbs.:).

  11. Yes, you guys did some amazing things with that car. You will find the 1% I am sure.

  12. More small steps. Got the two pierced helmet bars cut, only some minor fitting left. Only sacrificed ONE tube to figure theses out, points A,B,C have to nest in just the right homes for it all to work. Next I will move onto the helmet side bars. And Carl? I actually FEEL like that plate is in my neck today. Something tightened up on me!

Looking great Trent!! Amazing the amount of time and energy that goes into a project like this, and a small part is bending metal!! You include planning and research and it can be all consuming. Wishing you the best in 2012!!

  17. Looks good Trent! Where's the armor plate though? You gonna mount some guns on it too? lol

  18. I like to call it bulletproof. 3/8" ought to keep any unwanted engine parts away from my head!

  19. Thanks Dyce, I got your call and will catch up with you. I officially have one year with this project and you are right. Lots more planning and learning than actually building. I want to do it right the first time.

  20. Working on what I call the "dash bar" tubing above the main shoulder hoop in case something happens. Will keep arms and hands in and reinforce the main helmet hoop.

  21. She's looking great Trent!!! Make sure you try it all on for size wearing the real fire suit and helmet you plan on using. I thought I had plenty of space in my digger when I put it together but now I wish I had made the hoops an inch taller.

Trent, that bar might actually help in getting out. If you can get you elbows on top of that bar when leaving it would make rising easier.

  23. Doing that all the time. Even left the cage taller than I wanted for safety reasons.

That is one consideration Frank, that and not scraping up knuckles shall this thing get upside down!
It is amazing how much time and planning go into each tube of the frame. I use a pals bender so it sometimes take two trips to get a bend perfect then decide on placement. I also found out Dewalt holesaws SUCK. Milwaukees and another brand I forget hold up much better.

  24. x2 on the hole saws Trent, that is one place where you need the best you can buy. By the way lookin good on the fabrication, but like everyone says, put your full suit on and make your seat pan to make sure you ain't too tight. It don't matter too much on the dragster but remember you are gonna be in there for a while so be comfortable........

terrific step by step coverage...I WILL be there when is sets it's tires on the salt for the first time.
    Nice going, T....very nice :)

  26. Thanks man. I will be with Tim and the 416 pickup this year. I hope to have the car far enough to pre-tech it at Speedweek. I am doing well but $$$$$ and logistics are slowing the pace. Building the car is the easy part. Finding a tow rig a trailer and the money for all the needed safety gear, fire bottles etc is the hard part.

Trent, Invest in a set of Blair Rotabroaches.... you will never go back to a normal hole saw.
