In my model A I am running an "A" frame a 39 trans and a tourque tube 1940 rear. I am splitting the wishbones out to the frame rails, should I do the same to the rear radius rods? I've seen it both ways many times. advantages disadvanges??? And use full size radius rods on a shortened tourque tube, or shorten them too? And i need to move the spring over the axle instead of behind to keep the wheelbase the same. Plate and round tube are ok for the mount?
No. The torque tube looks after the rear end (along with the spring), the radius rods are just braces, but you do need them. You'll need to shorten the torque tube and drive shaft for the A application (because you're using parts out of a longer wheelbase car) and relocate the front mount for the radius rods accordingly.
What he said. You can get springhangers from Speedway for $39 that come complete with shackles and bushes. I have a similar setup and that's what I used. It worked out great.
You won't want to be using the 40 spring over the rearend since the spring has a very low arch. You'll need to get a Model A spring for over the axle use and the Speedway kit to mount it. Since you must not have the Model A rear crossmember with the arch in it and want to use a tube and suicide mount why not extend the A frame to the rear of the body (or at least measure to see if it is doable) and make your new spring mount and tubular rear crossmember utilize the 40 spring while keeping the A wheelbase. You will, naturally, need to remove a few leaves from the 40 spring for a better ride. I would also recommend using some 32-24 front wishbones split at the front as the As are kind of tender especially if they are rusty at all. OR make up some new tubing and use the Model A wishbone forgings at the front.
Sorry I have a 40 rear, "a" spring, 40 radius rods, 40 tube. front is "a" 4 inch drop axle, 40 spindles, 40 bones.
In that case get the mounts and set the spring on top of the diff per stock (a la rockabillyb***man's pic) and modify the tube/driveshaft/bones as discussed.
