i used to race a pavement late model and originally ran a spool then upgraded to a gold trac and i feel thats the ultimate way to go . with a spool we had to have the perfect stagger to get the car through the corners but then it was smoking one of them down the straights , with the gold trac it turned and went straight too , i think they are better than even a locker , would be fantastic on the street
My $0.02: I am currently running Detroit TrueTracs in the front and rear of my OT DD (250lb. ft. torque x >100:1 crawl ratio, Dana 60FF. 36" TSL's). Quiet, simple, seamless. The rear one replaced a Detroit Locker. If your TrueTrac is making noise, it is broken. My shop records show 31 customer installs, zero complaints, none broken. They don't require maintenance, 'cept changing the oil at the normal interval. I have run Detroit Lockers in the rear of several vehicles. I do not recommend them for the street in a lightweight or softly sprung vehicle (or if it is both), unless you like changing lanes every time you lift off or get on the throttle, going over 35 in the rain, and the sound (normal) just like parts breaking. Killer traction in the mud, rocks, or on the strip. Indestructible. I have never run a spool or a "Lincoln Locker" on the street. I have been too chicken to try it.
Watch out for cops my buddy got 2 $88.00 tickets for turning at an intersection on the gas a little to hard with hard compound tires squealing the right tire because of having one...... He changed to drag radials after getting the second ticket about a week later... not as noisey, but chewed up tires alot. Its still worth having though. Can't beat a good posi hole shot going through a light..
I've run posi's, lockers and spools in cars that routinely hit the track, and the spool is the best. Most of the folks that talk **** about a spool have never had one. The worst is a locker. The taller the sidewall the less you will notice it. OT 10.008@133 p***:
Ran the stock detroit locker in my 69 Super Cobra Jet Torino on the street almost daily for 10 years rain or shine with no noise or problems other than an occasional click or clunk in close parking and the tendency to slip sideways starting in snow because both wheels were spinning. Tired a spool for about a week to see how it effected my times and the tire screaming all the time drove me to take it out and go back to the locker. Drag strip times were exactly the same spool or locker.
