Is this the same thing as wearing your pants below your *** and holding them up with one hand, while jumping in a Honda and making a lot of noise but going no where ?
Wasn't there just a thread on this awhile back? Spots were to help you find you buddy's house at night (especially out in the country)... or by the police to find neckers... or for the delivery truck... or to hunt... or some other practical reason. Perhaps they were just high-end "cool" or a "luxury" options that got picked up by customizers? But.. dare I ask... why on customs? Me thinks it's just the "Harley / Chrome-it / Doo-dad / 100 lights is better than two, syncrome." Or.. mabey just because the look cool!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gary
Everybody knows they're for shining deer while violating. Haven't you ever shot an illegal deer from inside your chopped custom car? Love that gunpowder smell, although it does make your ears ring...
Jeff,like what you said.Back in '84,when I bought my Chevy,the repo Appletons with handles were $450 bucks.What 17 yo can afford that!.I had bought the Cal-Customs for 55 bucks.Vowed to myself,1 day I will have real Appletons.Now I do.
Damn,I guess there are some guys in this world that would ask why a woman has two ***s.....COZ THEY LOOK DAMN GOOD !!!
Asking "why?" is proof that the old statement "there is no such thing as a stupid question" is a stupid statement.............
When I got my cab in 67 it had a hole for a spot. I don't think mig welders were around. So welding up the hole was going to be a big deal. Easy put a spot back in the hole.
Yeah, ... spend hours and hours lowering, nosing, decking, shaving the handles along with almost all of the normal chrome trim on the sides of the car, chopping and reshaping the top, customizing the body panels to extend the rear fenders and attaching super smooth skirts, refining the door, hood and trunk gaps down to where they are almost invisible so the whole car looks long, low, seamless and smooth from end to end, and then tack on a pair of fake spotlights that interrupt the flow like a couple of chrome-plated pimples and don't even let you find your buddies house. That makes sense.
Well I know the guys that taught me used dummy spots. They didnt want to cut a hole in their pillars for spots they werent going to ever wire up in the first place. They wanted the tall domes like the appleton spots have and almost all the real spots are just oh well. They wanted the look, the dagmar bullet look. Dummy spots, dummy lake pipes with caps. These guys never did burn outs these were Kustom show cars. Low and slow.. no bags....... I remember getting his 51 merc hung in a low driveway at the KKOA. He drove the **** out of that car to. Spots are like bumper guards, some like them some dont.
Thanks Rik, YES that was my point ! If you have question then ask,but dont ask with a at***ude like " O just more shiney ****?" Give me a break.... it dont have nothing to do with having shiney ****.If you knew anything about early cars or customs then you would know that if you put on "more shiney ****" then you would have a lowrider not a custom! There is a huge difference. Then the reply of " Ya they were like stinkbug stance, minitrucks etc.... . Let me remind people ... They were not just a trend they were a staple in the EARLY custom days. Oh ya , im not talking about DUMMY spots either.
I was the OP with the question. No, I don't know everything about customs, that's why I asked. Evidently sarcasm doesn't travel well over the net. Devin
Devin,I'm sure nobody on here meant to be sarcastic. Most guys, when building a custom car,add twin spots to replicate the cars built in the 50's.Granted,not every guy can afford real Appletons, and the small Cal Custom spots replicate the baby Appletons that were used in the late 50's. It's just something that kind of "has to be used".I have a friend of mine, with a chopped Merc, that has NO spots or lake pipes. It looks *****in without the added "bling". Its up to you if you want to spots or not.
LOL YOU APPEARENTLY DONT HAVE A SINCE OF HUMOR i posted that just to see iof id get a rise out of someone , it worked
yes i did and appearently im more right then wrong from just reading some of the posts here spots were just a fad (especailly the fake ones) i didnt say i dont like them they have there place on the right car they are cool
Wrong, Wrong, Wrong! Spotlights were not a fad and not just a Custom thing! Here is a example: L.A. in the 30s, 40s, & 50s was surrounded by farm lands, ranches, large open areas. Well there was narrow roads and no street lights. So some people would install spotlights on their cars in order to see better at night. They would use them to check street signs, addresses etc..etc..They would use them for p***ing lights. There was a need for spotlights once upon a time.
I'd be willing to bet that most of these questions, and answers, are from younger members of the H.A.M.B. Probably the answer is style...looks. So, if young 'uns ask the question, they probably won't understand the answer. Probably the same reason anybody modifies anything. If you do not understand, sit back and observe everything. You might get it. But never belittle anyone or what has been done to their car because you don't understand. I'd love to know the age of those who post questions here. I think most of us older...uh, make that more mature guys/gals can guess pretty accurately.
all these people sitting here hating make me wanna go get my spot working again. spots are too damn cool, enough said. if you dont like em (real or fake) then to hell with you. go drive your toyota then!!!
