I have the three major rear bumper pieces (2 exhaust pods and 1 center section) on a 1954 Cadillac that I need to chrome plate. One of my local vendors sprays the chrome on like powder coat. I see what they are doing but I am not familar with its appropriateness for my application. Can anyone give me any ideas on whether or not this spray on is correct for a large vintage bumper or not. Thanks for any input. Jim
You're going to find "opinions" all over the board on this...I've seen it done and it's fooled many people...even "real" chromers. Depends on how good the spray chromer is...and powder coating will NOT look like chrome...it will look like aluminum...!!! R-
It's like a comparison of apples and oranges. They are both fruit but certainly not the same. What just frosts my *** about Chrome - a 79.99 dollar painted part will cost 89.99 chromed. Take your 79.99 part to the chromer and it will be 400.00.
Chrome - a 79.99 dollar painted part will cost 89.99 chromed with a single layer of chrome, right over the steel, in China or Mexico. Take your 79.99 part to the chromer, who gets paid US wages, and can't dump waste down the drain, and it will be 400.00, because it was triple plated, and polished, for a vastly better final product (aka: REAL chrome). Fixed that for you.
I went to a pretty well known cl***ic Chevy truck parts place yesterday to get a few odds and ends, and they had a brand new aftermarket bumper hanging on the wall that had the most God-awful plating job on it. I could see the scratches and pits from 25' away. A guy was buying one when I was there, and the box said "Made in Taiwan". Go figure. The Americans are the best chromers, hands down. You're going to pay for it because the plating process requires lots of labor hours to do it RIGHT. Any third-world plating job or any powdercoat chrome product is going to look like ****. I don't mean to sound like a hard-***, but in your case, you're going to have to spend the bucks to do it right.
I hear ya, really I do. The Oem Chrome wasn't perfect. Out of the die and into the chrome tank. Got a quote for a couple trunk bumpers, 900.00 each. Can buy a whole damn decent running driving presentable truck for 2000.00 . Tiawan Chrome bumpers for about 300. I asked the guy why so much and got the whole labor, stripping, straighten, plate 3 x & polishing explanation. The Chrome was cheap, thin and gonna pit on the foreign bumpers. ( just Like the Oem Chrome did or I would not be there) He also said stripping was the fastest and easiest part. So I asked him how much to strip the tiawaneese but new no pits no labor bumpers with his chrome that would last. 300.00 each. So that's 900 for two still nuts. That's a perfect candidate for powder coat its a working truck. They should just stamp them out of stainless the raw metal is the least expensive part
