Yes, I did a search, found an IPB (Illustrated parts Breakdown) and don't see it. What happened was the roll pin on my Gennie Swan Neck shifter decided to come out, how it did so with that little thin metal ring covering the holes the pin goes through is beyond me. So the shifter handle was free to rotate around, and pull out of the shifter mechanism itself... As I pulled the stick out, a little spring came flying out, and into the nether regions of my garage, where it appears it will be forever, I have looked for it, swept a powerful magnet around the last known vicinity, and no luck. Well, apparently, that is what kept the stick in a detent, so the shifter would just go straight into reverse, from Park... as it is now, just simply pulling back on the stick nets you reverse gear, no having to move the shifter to one side or the other to get past the notch in the shifter plate. Again, I did a search, printed out the IPB for the early, roll-pin style shifter ( which is what I have) and I'll be double dog damned if I see that spring anywhere...Anyone know where the thing is supposed to go? I'm sure I can conjure up another spring, if I knew the length, diameter, and compression on it...
Here is a diagram that I believe shows the spring you mean, #10. PAR can still get Gennie parts, and No. GEN1019C Stick Shift Hardware Kit, contains the spring and bushings Gennie says you should renew when taking the assembly apart. PAR charged me $12.95, I had it at my door in a week.
DK23, that is the IPB I printed out, but didn't know for sure what #10 was... What is this PAR that you speak of? Thank You for the speedy response, and I'll print out that Part # so when I find out what PAR is, I can order the spring and rebuild kit from them. Not having the correct roll pin, I am using a nut and bolt close to the correct diameter, to keep the car running, but would like to make sure it doesn't decide to slip into reverse, from park.... <Edit> went to PARR Auto, searched the part # 1019C for Gennie Shifter, and didn't find it. They do carry lotsa Gennie stuff, but I didn't see the rebuild kit with the spring...
PARR Automotive, in Oklahoma City. www.parrautomotive.com 800 6546779. No affiliation, just have used them in the past with good success. Ask for their catalog. The kit does include the roll pin. Hope this helps.
I ended up taking mine out due to issues. Got tired of messing with the dam thing, Good luck with that thing.
Well, looks like I am shot down for today, they don't show it on their website, and they don't answer the 405 area code number, or the 800 number. Sent an e mail to them, hopefully they will get back to me, and they still carry those parts. Thanks for the help, and Viva La HAMB !!!!
For me I'd like a completely different shifter. Mine has been nothing but trouble, the cross shaft broke and was TIG welded back together and now the mount to the trams won't stay put and keeps coming loose. I like the look but it's just too weak and finicky.
Why mess with Parr? Why not just call Gennie themselves? About a month ago I needed a bracket so I called Parr -"nope can't get it". Ok I'll go right to the source, called Gennie and in a little over a week it was on my doorstep.
Or you can use the spring from a 90's Harley Davidson front brake master cylinder, it's behind the lever, cut in half, has a more positive action
Thanks for the idea! My new gennie shifter came with out the spring and I have not found the right spring yet Joe
Thanks for the tip- the rain has quit, the sun is out (a rarity here on the CA North Coast this time of year) so I think a cruise over to my buddy "Harley Ted" is in order...
Had to order part #1019 from Parr, nice folks to deal with, waiting for the package to show up... Thanks for the referrals and ideas, guys...
Still waiting for the parts to arrive from either Parr, or from Genie to Parr...I ordered on the 21st of January, it's the 11th of February, WTF? Called Parr and can't get them to answer the phone. I know they are an hour ahead of me as far as time goes, which is why I started calling at 8AM this morning...
Okay, so they had been there TWO hours when I started calling. I went ahead and hit all our local hardware stores, looking for a spring with the right O.D. and compression rate, with no luck. When I thought I had a spring that was gonna be close, it hit, for lack of a better term, "coil bind" and wouldn't allow the stick to slide back, as it wouldn't go far enough. Looks like I get to wait...I have the tension screwed down pretty tight so I can drive it without worrying about hitting a chuckhole and popping it into another gear, to get me by,but pulling the shifter back just about takes both hands now...guess I just have to wait for the right parts.
Same thing happened to me that bastard spring shot out like a bullet! I got a spring from osh in one of those bag assorted sets. I found one that was longer and cut it down more than I needed and re streched it out. It was all I could do, Its been in there for three years with no problems. It does "feel" different than it used to but it works fine and I have never had another issue.
I got an e-mail from Parr the day before yesterday, saying they finally got a hold of the owner of Gennnie, and that he was gonna overnight the parts to them. Lo and behold, I get a Delivery Confirmation notice, with tracking number, from Parr yesterday. I don't know when the parts will get up here behind the redwood curtain, but I'll post when they do.
The parts arrived today, US mail delivery confirmation, and Parr didn't even charge shipping. Good place to deal with !!!
Good info; Thanks! Ordered the kit from PARR today. Just in time, it was their last one. Any idea where to get #16, which looks to be the reverse lockout plate on the bottom? Is it sheet metal or plastic? UPDATE: DUH, Never mind. Took a chance and called the Gennie #. Got a guy named Loc, who had the parts that I needed, and is shipping today. Friendly, fast and on time; what's not to like? According to him, they are manufacturing shifters, would rather sell through dealer network, but will sell parts over the phone.
Does it bug anyone else that a 1" long, ~3/16 round spring costs $12 to your door? I'm searching for something else that works. It's a spring after all.
