I'm thinking about using a 37 rear-end under my Model A coupester. To fit right would neccesitate lengthening the frame like Samiyam did on his recent build-up. My question is two-fold. First, will the ride quality be noticeably better running spring-behind set-up? And, secondly, is the 37 rearend that much beefier than an A rear? It sure looks like it is. If I'm going to go to all the trouble of a frame stretch it had better be worth it! What do you think?
Although Sam helped as welder and master fabricator the recent build up was on my frame. To get your question, if you are puting any horsepower to the rear wheels say more than 100 I would look at doing the 37 rear end. The model A rear end is so puny, you may be busting parts left and right. If you have the 37 use it. Also, I hear the 37 springs ride smoother than the A rear spring. It is a lot of work though.
We debated the same issue (A or 40 spring, on top or behind) along with figuring out the setup for 3 hours or so, and came to the conclusion that the spring behind would not only look pretty cool under the car, but would also ride smoother, that's why we used it. We had both setups at the time of build up. matt
Also, you can get the rear of the car lower with the spring behind than you can with the spring on top.
Yea, don't have the body yet, but it looks like there won't be as much of the frame poking up through the floorboard.
Urkillinmesmalls, Why did you keep the 40 spring? Was it because the kickup allowed you to run the low spring? I was wanting to run the Model A spring but its about an inch and a half longer than the 37 main leaf. Probably cause me perch shackle problems or require a custom main leaf? What did you do for a torque tube and radius arms? Did I miss that in Sam's posts? Thanks for your input. Bob
