I have what I think is a dropped model A axle and 37-40 split wishbone. There is a slight gap when I tighten the spring perches down. I think the axle and the bones are supposed to be 2.25" but there is just a very slight difference that leaves a small gap that is definitely much smaller than a quarter inch. I have done a search and ran into only one or two threads that talked about this. Only one gave a real answer and that was the superbell or the deuce factory sells them. I can't find a phone number for either. Is the DF still in business? Anyone know where I can get these shims? (I tried socal and looked in some other catalogs but can't find em.) Do I need to shim above and below the axle, or can I do just one shim per side? Would it make a difference? ..or do I just need to tighten it more and try and force it shut?
superbell is pete & jakes http://www.peteandjakes.com/ http://www.peteandjakes.com/Catalog.aspx Part Selection Part # 1046 Name 1937-41 Perch Boss Shim (.050) (pair)
ah, ok that explains why I couldn't find them. I should probably know that... I'll give pete and jakes a call. Thanks for the part number!
I posted the same question recently and it was chalked up to wear on old parts. I don't think you can tighten that down to close the gap without applying some heat to it.. I'm planiing on shimming it or applying a couple dozen coats of paint.
Speedway sells two 1/8 inch shims that go on either side of the axle to take up the 1/4 inch. I just got two sets from them to use on my 34 axle with Speedway bones. Don
I don't think so. I had a set of model a bones on this axle and they fit nice and snug. I measured it with a tape measure and it looks closer to 2.25" then 2" (though it does look slightly under 2.25").
Just got these and did one side so far. Worked like a charm. 2 050 shims fit snugly and got rid of the gap. I put one above and one below the axle. Thanks again. Have to say Pete and Jakes were great on the phone, and a day and a half later they were in my mail box. Pretty great.
