Spring shackle pin removal

    I've got a pair of 36' rear bones that I've got in finished paint and dumb*ss me forgot to pull the original shackle pins & sleeves. I thought of making a puller/pusher but the pin will hit the bone's casting before it'll go all the way thru.
    Maybe cut the pin as I go???
    Any hint & suggestions?
    Is there a standard tool to swap them out that I don't know about?

    Removing and particularly installing original style steel-sleeved shackle is a real pain in the neck.
    Yes, there was a KR Wilson tool for doing the job but I don't know if someone has yet made a reproduction or not.

    It ain't gonna be easy since you've got the rods in finish paint and removal always involves hammers, and saws and often heat, acetylene style heat AND since the rods are loose it will require a vise, a big vise.

    The shackle bolt****embly consists of a shackle bolt which is threaded on each end with a square below for the sideplates and a round central shank running through the rubber bushing material which was originally vulcanized to the bolt, then compressed into the thin steel shell which is now rustwelded into the hole...most likely, at least at each end.

    One non-paint-destructive method would be to drill into the bushing around the bolt and eliminate a goodly bit of the rubber which is securely holding the bolt in the sleeve. Just go carefully and don't break any drill bits. Then make up a simple slap hammer to pull the pin out, or like an axle, a 6 foot length of heavy chain hooked to a smaller chain attached to the shackle pin. Snap the chain like a whip and it may pop that stud out like a coannon shot.
    Your pound in and saw off system would work too.

    Once the stud is out you simply hack saw the sleeve in a couple places and puch it out of there in chunks.

    Run a brake hone through the bore a time or two, bevel the entry edges, and you're ready to install a new set of original style shackles or use some modern hard bushings and u-shackles if you choose.

    I took a hacksaw and cut a relief down the length of the sleeve. Even if you can't get it cut all the way, it makes it a lot easier to collapse in on itself with a chisel.

    Original kit was a simple puller consisting of a tbular part against the forging with a female threaded hole in the srew ram to pull the pin out, then a male threaded screw ram (always found broken off now! The dealer I got mine from 30 years ago said he had never seen an intact one.) that went through the hole and pulled the sleeve. Then a big tool shaped like a shallow C-clamp pushed in the new unit with a ram shouldered to push only on the outer shell...
    I think knocking and cutting are simplest alternative now, since the KRW stuff is essentially unfindable, and the fact that all the KRW sleeve pullers are broken tells me that cutting and collapsing the shell is the way to go!
    Be aware that heavy sledge hammering will bend the forging, leaving you a nice mess.

    Howdy. I joined in hopes of finding a suitable home for a K. R. Wilson TZ-188 spring shackle tool I have one. I found it in stuff inherited from Dad. Wondered what it was. Clearly designed to press something. I got it derusted and turning OK. Seems to have traces of dull read paint on it. Does anyone need this? We can work out something on postage.
