Ok Ive talked on this before bit here we go again...
    I had a Model A spring and Im USING a 40 axle.
the model a spring was to short.........I ordered another spring said to fit a 40 axle...well it was to wide and now I have a crazy reversed perch set up...
who sells a spring thats 34 inches eye to eye?
speedway does not offer it and thats like the end of the world if they dont have it right?

I've seen plenty Model A springs on stock '40 rear ends. You just have to load the main leaf by itself first, using a clamp to draw it over. then load the other leaves.

Here's a thought - what about de-arching the main leaf of a stock A spring until it's 34 inches wide - then match the curve of that spring with the rest of the pack. Build the perch to suit the overall height you want.

Custom main leaf from a local shop out of the question? I found a local place that would do it for around 50 bucks. Sell one of the wrong springs to cover cost.

Another option - If you're using an original Ford axle and trust your welding skills. (you must - aren't you using a suicide perch?) Just weld the perches directly to the axle at the proper width for your existing spring. You'd even gain an inch or so of drop with this setup.

I think you've got enough stuff laying around to make something work safely without clamping, spreading, jacking, etc. Maybe I'm a goon but that sort of stuff scares me.

Sorry, I thought you were talking rear axle. I don't know alot about '40 fronts except what you know, they are wider at the perches. Look on page 411 of the Golden Anniversary Speedway catalog. There are springs there for a '40 axle. Good luck

Yea I talked to speedway and the guy told me for some reason I have an odd ball axle. and they dont offer any springs that lenth.
Nads to a shorter spring and cut the shackles and welded them back together longer....is it right NO does it work YEA!!
I at this time have the perches turned around and the spring mounted inside the backwards perches..its will work but as usual the ride will be HARD due to the fact the shackles will hit the perchs if you look at it to hard...I ran a old model A spring on el mosquito and the spring was slow wore out it sat on the axle..ride sucked. I replaced it with a new one....ride still sucked so why bother huh? [IMG]

Hey Mike, those assholes at Brad Ragan can't help you?
I know they kind of shrug when you mention the word CAR. It seems to me the best way is to get a custom made main spring.
Didja check to see the perch bosses are the correct width and diameter for a Ford spindle?
The axle sure looks like a Ford one to me, but then again what do I know?
I wouldn't lengthen the shackle like I did, it's much better to scratch make shackles. Talking of which that trailer shop across from the The Parliament House, the world's largest gay resort has a huge selection of shackles and bushings for ridiculously cheap prices.
I'm gonna redo my rear end as soon as I get the Chevy up and painted.

Good luck, I can't wait for you to have a hot rod again, it's gonna be fun wasting you.

Mike, I think you realise the problem you are having (now) but some people might not realise why these parts will not fit together.
The A axles have the perch bosses a certain distance apart, and the perches and spring are directly above. The 40 axle has the perch bosses wider apart, and the perches are projected forward of the axle and are wider still. The 40 spring is a lot wider than an A spring, and the A spring is too narrow.
So either a custom spring is needed, longer than an A spring, or maybe it would be easier (you never know) to scare up a 32-34 axle.
    Hope this helps.
    Mart.

Posies part # 1009 33 1/2" center to center Posies
OR take tour main leaf to a local spring shop and get them to cut and rewind the ends.
