Hot Rods St Christopher wins Good Guys Hot Rod of the year

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hrm2k, May 21, 2023.

  1. After watching the video with explanation of the inspiration for the paint, the Hemi, the whole look, I think it fits perfectly. Please don’t take this as an argument, simply my observation/opinion

Not a lot of fence sitters for this one.

Great choice for an award. Got folks talking.

The editor's column in the new Goodguys magazine. The car is also featured later in the magazine.

I think the column makes some good points about leaving your comfort zone behind when it comes to building hot rods, if even just a little bit.

Given the Usual (and unusual) Suspects involved I'd say that song might have had a role, if only as a background extra. Kool...

The feature article from Goodguys Magazine on Coby's coupe. You can read any full issue on their website if interested.
I also included the other finalists after the feature of his coupe. The other finalists are cool and each has a unique touch, but IMO they're just a bit too safe. Hot rods are supposed to grab society by the eyeballs, and Coby's coupe does that.

I bet that St. Christopher paint looks amazing in person under the Sun, I dont think the paint photo's well
But if any car painted colors like a bow after it Rained ,,, I would rattle can before I would be seen in

In this day & age this is what it takes to be truly different.
My first reaction was; "What the..." but as I studied the car it was obvious that the workmanship was absolutely top notch. The proportions are spot on. The attitude is to be admired and envied.
I've decided that the paint is... well, paint. I personally think that the car would look good in any of the colors used, but just one. I like a simple, subtle design and not all the garish wild ideas of a lot of cars built then & now. But that doesn't matter. It's not my car or my design. Beauty & art are in the eye of the beholder.
I've never had a car that's worthy of the awards, accolades or magazine coverage that this car has rightly earned. And that's O.K. with me.
This car is a true work of art!!

Very much of an era of course........but an era that I'm quite happy to consign to the best forgotten. No wonder my interest during the 80's moved in the direction of stock restorations :D

I got to see it in person today, and had a nice chat with the owner.

It is impressive car, and the owner is very pleased with it.

  15. When I want to be different, you know, stand out from the others ... I throw on a pair of my "Daisy Dukes" and dangle one of my nuts out the bottom of my shorts. Some people chuckle, some are horrified, some couldn't care. Same result for a LOT less money  :D ;)

*Except a whole lot of people absolutely love this car.

I would wager that the same is unlikely to be said for your proposed scenario.

It's one driving scooter too, saw the video of the car with Bill and Nicole Johnson driving.
Both the car and her are more than just a pretty face!
Bill, I guess the girls might say he's cute.

This car is the best hot rod built in my lifetime. Why? Because it ticks all of the boxes that a hot rod should tick. It's fast. It's mean. It's a snarling beast on the hunt... AND, it's a fucking middle finger, a scream of defiance, a goddamned anthem of rebellion. It ain't bowing to your judgments, mine, or anyone else's for that matter.

My opinion? If you don't like it, cool. I get it. If it offends you though? I'd argue you don't understand hot rods, the history they are built upon, or the people that laid the foundation for you to have anything at all to hate.

But... you know... opinions are like assholes.

The difference is that I would want Saint Christopher in my garage.

  20. There is a good reasons why we don't see more cars painted this way, the amount of time one must spend in the paint booth must be staggering, I've never seen anything like it and in this case dare to be different paid off big time! HRP

  21. It’s definitely the baddest of the contenders.
the “trad” styled ones almost look out of place.
Hard to believe no one has made a comment on a few of those wheel choices.
2 hemis and a caddy in that group….mmmmmmmmmmm

speaking of dangling balls, looks like the winner had the largest set.

That made me laugh! That's for sure!

Once I read about the inspiration behind the paint it all made sense to me. What a grouse Hot Rod!

Sorry guy, but the aesthetics of that paint job just suck. It's obviously a very well done, high dollar, pro shop built car, with the best of components and engineering. Well done. But that paint scheme.... WTF???? And I caught a bunch of crap for having two tone paint on my A pickup (which is still a work in progress BTW). The problem isn't that I want or expect every car to be the same, not at all, and that should be pretty obvious. It's just that the designs of old cars like 30's Fords have lines, shapes, that are pleasing to the eye. The eye likes to follow the lines, like following the lines of the female form. Men are born with a natural attraction to smooth, organic shapes. Just my opinion, but I think paint should flow with the lines, help the eyes to follow them; this paint does the exact opposite, it intersects with and distracts from the lines. It's obviously very nice paint, very well done, and I'm sure cost a lot of money, but it hurts my eyes.

And I don't give a shit about " a fucking middle finger, a scream of defiance, a goddamned anthem of rebellion", that's lame, immature. Fuck that. Nice car though, just don't dig the paint. At all. And I think a lot of you say you like it just because it seems to be the thing to say. Maybe I'm wrong about that, maybe you do really think it's attractive, but I don't think so. The emperor has no clothes.

I take great pride in my immaturity and hope to hang on to it as long as can… I’ve always felt maturity brings a certain amount of closed mindedness that I can’t imagine ever having.

The emperor has no clothes? You don’t know me homie… cuz if you did, you would know I don’t give two shits about the perceptions of my opinion. If I did, I wouldn’t be where I am…

It is weird as shit that people can get so upset about someone else’s opinion, no? Fucking car is tickling some funny bones man. Best of my generation… so far…

    For sure.

@Church knew he was “alienating” a segment… and I know he isn’t surprised it’s making some act like politicians on twitter. It was kind of the point. :)

I love the rest of the car, like I stated before the workmanship is awesome, the stance etc are all awesome but again, the paint screams 80's street rod to me.

Some complain about the two-tone and swirl paint jobs of the 80's street rods and then exclaim how awesome this paint job is, is the part that, well I don't get.

If this was an 80"s build I'd get the paint job, just pick up a couple hot rod, street rod mags from back then and you'll find that this paint job would fit right in with some of them.

The pics showing the custom paint jobs from guys like Roth etc all miss one very important component, they all flow with the shapes of the cars, infact many of Roths actually enhanced the body flow.

Again if the gent is happy with his car more power to him and I wish him the best, but there is nothing whatsoever in that paint job that even remotely says " traditional" "traditional custom" or even "along ed Roth styling" to me. It screams 80's street rod...

‘it’s totally cool not to like it man… and this is how you state an opinion. All good.

One bone to pick - it’s not an 80s paint job… more late 60s early 70s drag car inspired than anything else.
