I'm curious, if I may be so bold as to ask, do you really find the paint scheme aesthetically pleasing? Seriously? If that car had totally off topic 20" wheels and rubber band tires, a modern LS power train, high back bucket seats with cup holders and modern gauges with a stereo stuck in the middle of the dash, etc, would you still think "well at least the paint is cool". Be honest.

Actually, that question is to everybody that says they like it.

You mean if it wasn’t a traditional race car but instead a 80s van, would I like the paint job?

    Absolutely not.

To me, cars aren’t independent choices but cohesive decisions. The reason this car is so polar is because it’s so cohesive, but original… The paint is a huge part of that. If it was black or red or baby blue or whatever, I prolly wouldn’t care all that much about it.

Everything about the thing says something to me. It just takes me back to the drag strip with my dad.

  3. I agree totally with @Ryan, on anything else I probably wouldn’t like it, I said it before in this thread once I watched the video of the inspiration it all made sense, I think they nailed what they were after.

Oh and I tell everybody, I may get older but I refuse to grow up.:)

  5. Not that you were asking me @Blues4U, I think both those cars are rad but I think St. Christopher took it one step further, it’s similar but somehow meaner and nothing like them, again my opinion. I really really thought I should hate the paint when I first saw it but it speaks to me…

The paint job would look perfect on a late 70s custom van.....just sayin'.

yeah. If I knew more about vans and the history of that movement, I’d prolly agree with you. But I don’t know a damned thing about the van craze.

Those colors and the angle screams 79 Dodge van to me :)

and really, I don't mean to be disparaging, they looked neat like that

saw the car at Goodguys in Pleasanton over the weekend. the paint neither adds to it or takes anything away from it when you are standing there looking at it. a picture on the computer the paint just grabs you, but in real life there is so much more to look at like this:

And in that case it worked, those angled stripes on a big flat panel with next to no lines added something for the eyes to follow; and they didn't add any dissonance between the lines of the car and the lines of the paint design.

Hot Rods always were an act of rebellion. When you talk about the paint complimenting the lines of the car, to me that feels more like a street rod. Polished, inoffensive, smooth. Pleasing to the general public. The two-tone in your avatar is a street rod-style paint scheme in my view. Nothing wrong with that, it just doesn't have an attitude.

I've always tried to build cars that are uncommon from what you see day to day or even at car events. A two-tone paint job that colours within the lines doesn't scream hot rod to me. Just because you don't get it, doesn't mean others don't see it.

As Ryan alluded to, the paint job alone doesn't make a car. Locally I find there are a lot of builds where the builder likes a bunch of different things, but they don't go together on the finished build. There's no cohesiveness. If the car was a modern build with the same paint, it would miss. If it was a different vehicle without the same vision, it would miss.

When I saw photos of the car in bare metal, I thought it was the coolest. Then I saw it was getting painted and I expected the car to be ruined. I figured the mainstream shiny black or red or some other generic hot rod colour would end up on it and its visual impact would fade and hide. Not so. To me, the attitude of the paint and willingness to buck trends goes with the attitude of the rest of the car perfectly.

No need to try to convince those that like it that they shouldn't. It really speaks to me. If it doesn't speak to you, that's fine. Don't need to convince anyone otherwise.

The red and blue car you posted are visually pleasing and interesting. The blue car is a bit forgettable. Not that it's not a memorable car, but it doesn't have a lasting visual impact to me. I won't be scheming about how I could integrate some of its ideas into my own build. The red car is much wilder, but doesn't bridge the gap between race car and street driven hot rod (visually) as much as Saint Christopher. SC just checks the right boxes in the right ways.

I was just standing next to it.

It flows just fine. The angles of the stripes match the radius lines of the arcs of body crown perfectly.

  18. I've been going to car events my whole life with really nice cars. Very rarely does one hit you between the eyes where you say aloud. "Wow, that's badass!"

Like it or hate it, glad someone is spicing things up. And for the record I dig it.

That is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read here on the HAMB. Think of all the classic hot rods over the years, all the AMBR winners, all that had paint scheme's that enhanced the flow of the body lines. Yeah, they're all "street rods". Got it. But not THIS car with 70's era custom van paint job, not it isn't a street rod, but everything else is. OK. That makes a lot of sense.

This pretty much clarifies it all, the paint pretty much sucks, but on THIS car it works. OK. Sorry, but I'm not buying it.

Not trying to convince anybody of anything, just explaining why it doesn't work for me. I'm allowed to do that, right? You know, non-conformism works both ways.

I think you and a couple others missed the point of my posting those pics. They weren't meant to compare to the coupe in this thread, but as a response to somebody saying if the car were painted one of several colors the person "prolly wouldn’t care all that much about it". When I read "baby blue" my mind instantly went to the Brian Bass built coupe, which itself was inspired by an earlier drag racer with his own unique twists. I find it interesting that 6 years ago it was the hottest most badass car on the scene; now it's uninteresting, boring even.

I think differing opinions are fine... I mean, this car was literally conceived in the heart of division - designed to light the fuse of debate and discord. Even my brother, in all his curmudgeonly glory, can't wrap his head around the audacious paint job, but there's a glimmer of comprehension buried in those furrowed brows.

But let's talk about the delivery, my friend, the way you're dropping your truth bombs. It's like you're this antiquated relic of outrage, screaming at a flickering screen, hoping the universe aligns with your preconceived notions, or heaven forbid, your precious turf remains untrammeled by unwanted souls.

Again, if you don't like the car that's totally within the realm of reason. But what's up with your compulsion to keep this vitriolic serenade rolling? It's a tad strange. Are you secretly infatuated with this ride, with its paint job winking at you like a mischievous co-conspirator? Are we about to witness your pickup metamorphose into a rolling Neapolitan ice cream dream? Hell, man, the unknown ain't your enemy, it's your wild card, your ticket to living life. So, step up, own it, and for the love of all things strange, just dive headfirst into the glorious abyss. Let your freak flag fly, homie.

It evokes emotions - it has to be winner! Like it or not.
Knowing the caliber of creativity and ingenuity on this site it’s amazing to see the response this car gets!
Now ask yourself - would you drive it!

I talked to him the other day and laid it on so thick that I'm pretty sure he started to wonder about my sanity... mixture of amusement and bewilderment I think. :)
