Yesterday after I finished Thanksgiving dinner, I decided to look for something to read. I ended up looking through my Rodder's Journals. It seems like every time I look through one, I find some little tidbit that I missed before or forgot about. Anyway, in The Rodder's Journal Number Twenty One there is a small write up on Von Dutch on page 6. In the story there are a few great kolor pics of Von Dutch and his work. One picture that really got my attention was a picture of the side of Stan Betz's shop truck. It was a late 70s early 80s El Camino that Von Dutch did alot of paint work on. The whole side of the El Camino was cut off and saved and was part of a Von Dutch art exibit at Cal State Northridge awhile back. I'd never seen color pictures of that ElCo. I knew I had seen it before, so I started looking through my books and magazines and found very little on it. I did find a few black and white pictures of it in the Summer '93 issue of Custom Rodder on page 28. I guess that Von Dutch did it up for Mr. Betz back in '82. There is some wild work on it that would thrill any kustom paint nut or Von Dutch fan. I know the El Camino is kind of the wrong era for what is normally talked about here on the Hamb, but it is a super piece of Von Dutch's work that seems to have had little coverage and very little is known about it. What I was wondering if anyone out there has any kolor pics of it. I would enjoy seeing some, and I'm sure everyone else would like them too. Thanks for any help! Layta...............E
I know Bo Bertilsson took some photos of it in the early 80´s, before it was cut up. The photos was published in the (Swedish) magazine "Colorod". I guess I have it somewhere in my collection, though Colorod alone is a few hundred magazines to search... Better up, if you are out there Bosse: How about searching your archives and put them up on the HAMB? (Or else I might find them sooner or later...)
In the '80s I had a shop a block from Betz speed and color, and bought my paint there . I always thought that El Camino was ugly, well at least the bed panels
Stan Betz is such a nice guy. I went out to his old shop to see him last year. Just absolutely one of the greats.
Somewhere I read that if you look real close on one of the sides of the truck, you can see sperm swimming inside the flame job. Found it.
