I've been dealing with Star Photo all week. I guess they have been having some server outage problems due to some bandwidth spikes caused by the HAMB. They've been pretty cool about it all and are actually working to place HAMB members on a different server to help solve the problem... I just thought I would fill you guys in just incase some of you are having problems now...
I'm impressed and since they have never asked me for a dime, if they get this all worked out, I think I'll "buy" an extra photo "album" from them. Thanks for handling the situation for us Ryan. Your the best
Oh SHIT! I think this all started when I posted a thread about K-member's Starphoto site. His site doubled the amount of views in like half a day. Toward the end, people were having problems getting into Starphoto. I have been having problems ever since......Oooops. Are they real pissed over there in Taiwan? Maybe Butt Reynolds can calm them down with another "motorcycle" show.....
Just a reminder...more than a few "free" photo hosting sites have come and gone over the last few years. I'm sure there are people who used to use the Photopoint site a couple of years ago. They started having problems and outages and then announced that they would be a pay site and soon after went out of business. A lot of people lost a LOT of images that they had stored on Photopoints servers. Do not count on Star Photo to store your photos and to give you a lot of notice if they switch to being a pay site or if they go under and delete your pix. It seems like a good site so far, but so did Photopoint. They cannot keep hosting everyones pix for free forever. Server time and bandwidth costs money (ask Ryan). Save your photos on your hard drive or on CD's or on your own web space, too.
we should post links to other photo host sites to take the pressure off of them. A couple of us are using www.pbase.com at least there were others like socheap for instance. http://www.pbase.com/socheap/root&view=tree try it out.
Webhosting is cheap these days. If you have the skills, I'd suggest buying domain name (as low as $5 a year) and webhosting ($1 to $10 a month). It isn't as easy to use as starphoto, but you know that it won't go away. As a bonus, you get to keep your email address forever (as long as you pay domain name fees). I use Gallery (free software that runs on the server, not your computer at home) to manage all my pictures - well over 1,500 pictures of my cars and bikes, as well as the cars and bikes of the guys in my club. There's a bunch of other stuff up there as well. Again, you have to be a bit of a computer geek to do it, but it isn't that hard. Tackett Take a look for yourself
[ QUOTE ] A lot of people lost a LOT of images that they had stored on Photopoints servers. [/ QUOTE ] .......Yep! I was one. I got on there just before the went to "pay." I gladly paid for space and THEN they went belly up and I lost everything. That SUCKED! That was when I had my buddy help me get my own site to host photos and have a "stable" e-mail address. www.weirdtrip.com I've had a ball with it.........
