Did you ever ***emble this Monogram model when you were in high school? The real deal is owned by a guy in Las Vegas. He bought it 55 years ago at an estate sale. After 60 years since it was built by Darryl Starbird, it is coming out of hiding and will star in the annual show he hosts in Tulsa. All the chrome was removed for a paint touch-up at the time. It will be shipped back to Oklahoma for the show next week. The sketchy pictures below were given to me by the owner. There is no fibergl*** in this car. It is all fabricated of steel and sculptured with lead. Weighs in at about 3 tons. Body lifts up on hydraulics and the bubble top lifts independently on its own hydraulic rams
Never knew it had a " funny car" body! In various '66 era magazines, it was up for grabs in a Monogram contest. Good to see it lives!
it did not have a funny car hinged body back when it was built, that is something the current owner did to it recently
Never been to the Starbird show. But it might be worth ignoring the pinup and beard contests to check out the Orange Hauler!!
Very cool that it will be there. I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to walk into an estate sale and see that car sitting there. I periodically visit relatives in Tulsa, and I'm embarr***ed to admit I have yet to stop at the Starbird museum...one of these days I need to make the time.
