Darrell Starbird, the "Bubble Top King's Autorama opened this weekend here in flyover country,Tulsa Ok. and drew his usual bevy of "interesting?"concept cars. Since you west coast guys have been shaming us with those pics from the Grand National Show, I thought we should fight back with pics of some of the truly outstanding rides that have shown up here in town for Darrell's show.[IMG]

Who couldn't love a stainless 60's T-bird with a double bubble top, moon discs and big ol' fins.

or an "A" coupe with an air cleaner higher than the roof and those nice snug fitting rear tires.

Here's one you may have seen cruising through Bob's Big Boy or parked at a Wal-Mart while some one did a little shopping. And, yes, that's two 6-71's with injectors parked side by side on top of the engine

Here's one of Darrell's own personel statements. The side mounts emphasize that thirtys classic look, the fouries skirts and the racy vee windshield. The trash can makes a statement of it's own and only adds to the effect.

Think you have trouble parking your Hummer? Try finding a spot for this at the local mall.

And my favorite, with it's subtle blending of the Moon tank Bonneville look with the ever popular surfer look and that outstanding grill treatment. Hard to beat, in my book.
Now remember guys, somebody loves these babies and laughing, even snickering, would be like laughing at your best friends really ugly daughter so be careful. And all you LA Roadster show guys, eat your hearts out for not being here.

Fugly, except for the T bird. I was following a convertible PT Cruiser yesterday and wondered how it would look as a tub roadster. Now I know. Horrible.

Except it's not stainless, it's painted that color. It was at the GNRS and a bunch of folks taked about the type of paint it was and stuff on a number of coverage posts from there last month. Awesome car!

:D The T-Bird maybe the rest of the cars (?) belong in in someones bad dream. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" There must have been better looking rides there!

I know JPBANJO was pulling you guys legs. I guess his point is that Darryl "The bubble top King" will swallow his pride(?) and let about anything in his show. There were tons of nice cars there and I hope someone will post them. Most of his "creations" are pieces of sh*t. That blue and white turd is a good example. For most of us it's a good mid-winter break and a chance to see our cusin buddys and see what they have been working on.

Who won the big bucks? We went Saturday, second time I've been, to me about 80% of the cars shouldn't have been there. But the remaining 20% were very nice, not a lot of HAMB friendly cars, very nice 30 model a sedan next to cruzin292's 40 coupe

Because of my kids ball games I was not able to go this year. I hated
missing it, this was the first time in a long time that I missed one.

    Who won the money!!!

The Dynamat guy won with the Mercrodder from the cover of Hot Rod Mag in 1994. ??????????? Supposed to go to the most innovative new car. It is a superb car no doubt, but It seemed an odd choice to me. I overheard others voicing the same thoughts.

  18. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? Surely not. That car is 16 years old, not much innovation since it debuted. Wow.

I'd sure like to know what exactly is the judging criteria. What separates that car from Strange's "Resilence" Buick, Kopper Kart clone, Outlaw clone, SAR's Ford F157, and the 33 Willys? Hmmm.

I always try to guess who's gonna win and am always guessing wrong. Darn.

    1st year: Chrysler Airflow
    2nd year: "Loaded" 29 RPU
3rd year: "Beatnik" Gary Choppit Kustom
    4th year: "Vampire" bubbletop
    5th year: "Magnatude" roadster
    6th year: ??? Mercrodder ???

I'm looking for a pattern. Perhaps there is no pattern.

Is there another thread with more pics from the show? I'd sure like to see them.

  20. I had a great time this year. It wasn't my favorite Starbird show, but probably 2nd or 3rd. I hear so many complain about the show and "it's the same crap every year." I think it is really more about how you look at it. I used to say the same thing. I have had a change of heart. I found my fire again. I go to look at the cars I DO like and study the craftsmanship on everyone of them. Sure, I walked past lots and lots of cars I didn't like, but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying the show. I don't like ponying up the 20 bucks for admission, but it is what it is.

Fritz I missed my opportunity to meet you AND the Kopper Kart boys.

    Hey Jake,

    Keep the pictures coming...........

I didn't know that you could work a Kamera. LOL!!!

  24. I'm always amazed at the amount of work some guys will put into a car that is really bad news. Lots of mechanical & body work ability, dedication and maybe money but no taste, vision or artistic ability. I can appriciate the amount of work but EEEUUUUWWWWWW!!!!
