Hot Rods start die

    sbc 350 ran fine i changed the plug wires and installed a new ignition switch. cranked it ran fine. Next day go to start it soon as it cranks it dies want stay running even if you press the gas pedal. every now and then like white smoke comes out the carb.

    ign wire on the start terminal on the switch?

    Timing. Check the bolt that keeps your distributor hold down in place is tight. Worth a shot.
     
  4. Do back over everything you did,
    Inspect the parts you put on, the parts you took off.

    My money is on the ignition switch or its connections though.


    But to save your sanity, hot wire the coil and try to start it. That will flush out all the good stuff if it runs and leave you with the ignition switch

    I once had a off topic customers car that when it started if you simply "let go " of the key without easing it back to the run position it would snap slightly past the run position and "die"....start it up, let go ...same shit....just had to "ease" the switch to run.....
     
  6. First, as others have posted, check the wiring of the ignition switch. Use a voltmeter to check you are getting power when and where you want it. In addition some vehicles are wired to bypass the ignition resister when the motor is being cranked. This compensates for the battery voltage dropping slightly when cranking and gives a hotter spark. If your resister has failed (or maybe the wires are loose) it would produce the situation you describe. Try a test by bypassing the resister with a jumper wire while the engine is being cranked.
