Hi All, I don’t have a ton of time right now to work on the hot rod, but I do have time every now and then to pick up a book and ‘study’. I’d like to start my collection of technical books that will probably disappear in the near future and hold onto them for the next 50/60 years (being optimistic with todays array of things that will kill you). From my research here and abroad, it appears the David Vizard and HP books are the renowned for small block chevys so I would like to attain a slew of those variety of books. I am also looking for the turbo 350 and Ford 9” related between HP books and SA design, probably others I do not know about as well. There is so much garbage on the Internet these days it is hard to know who and what to trust. Is there anyone out there that has extra copies or looking to unload their collection onto the next generation? Located in western Pennsylvania willing to drive or meet up, also travel for work now and then around the country so I may be able to pick up in person, message me please. I plan on p***ing down to my kids when it’s time since this 31’ is a forever family member. I have a slew on the list that I’m going to check local bookstores /ebay/ craigslist / market place over time that aren’t overpriced: How to Rebuild Your Small-Block Chevy 9781557880291 HPBooks, Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 Handbook UPC: 086589000517 ISBN: 9780895860514 SA Design, GM Turbo 350 Transmissions: How To Rebuild & Modify ISBN: 9781613251898 SA Design, Ford Differentials - How to Rebuild the 8.8 and 9 Inch ISBN: 9781613250389 HPBooks, Auto Math Handbook ISBN: 9781557885548 SA Design, Performance Automotive Engine Math Book ISBN: 9781934709474 HP Books | Engine Builders Handbook UPC: 075478012459 ISBN: 978155788255 SA Design, Chevrolet Small Block Parts Interchange Manual ISBN: 9781934709238 SA Design, High Performance Differentials, Axles & Drivelines Book ISBN: 9781934709023 SA Design, How To Build Max Performance Chevy Small Blocks on a Budget Book ISBN: 9781932494846 SA Design, Hot Rod Ch***is How To Understand, Install, Update '28 to '64 ISBN: 9781929133703 SA Design, Super Tune & Modify Holley Carburetors ISBN: 9781934709658 SA Design, David Vizard's How to Build Horsepower Book, Sold as Each ISBN: 9781934709177 SA Design, How To Build Killer Chevy Small Block Engines, All Gen I Engines ISBN: 9781613254899 Reher Morrison Championship Engine ***embly 9780972343282 SA Design, Weld Like A Pro, Beginning to Advanced Techniques ISBN: 9781613252215 Update on the 31’, had all the kids help change the completely enclosed valve covers to some local ones that I bought off of fellow jalopy member for a few bucks that had a PCV valve and breather to let it breath better. Let it run for a half hour/ 45 minutes and did not see any major smoke coming out of the breather on the p***enger side. However, there was some oil drips that still came out of the oil fill tube breather on the Edelbrock performer intake so I need to still look into this issue apparently… Hoping the books will have some troubleshooting that can address this issue. Thanks guys.
I had a lot of those that either got water damaged or the mice got into them in the storage shed. Some are good for street motors and some are aimed at all out race motors and some may be obsolete in that the parts that they suggest are no longer made or available. Sometimes it comes down to simple economics. Cost wise a factory roller cam block out of an 80's rig with a good set of heads, intake , cam and pistons will perform better at a much lower cost than a built to the nuts 60's engine. The 327 that was in my 57 Panel that had 12.5 Jahns pistons, 2.02 heads, Engle solid lifter cam and a 2x4 Corvette intake made maybe 350/400 hp and would cost a ton to duplicate today and it isn't hard to get that hp out of a roller cam block with the right goodies now. I need to dig around in the shed that some of the books are in anyhow as I need to check over a couple of engines I have decided to sell and can see if any in that box are usable or need to go to the recycle.
Pocket Ref from https://sequoiapublishing.com/ I'm in the SW so can't drop off books. I have found the local library has a volunteer staff that hold book sales to help support the library. They get donations and sell them at a buck each. Found some really good stuff. If the car is to last for generations, write down every part and it's price and history. Update with each mod. It will make it a family heirloom even more.
This is great info! @Mr48chev - I don’t plan on getting too wild, just a good streetable motor that won’t overwhelm a stockish TH350. It currently has a 73’ Camaro 350 block but I’d like to put this motor on an engine stand set up that where I can fire it up a few times a year. The books will help troubleshooting and other issues on this current motor, but within the next several years, I would like to build a small block Chevy with my kids and do the engine swap. @RodStRace - Family heirloom would be the best way to describe ‘the coupe’! My godfather spent over 30 years doing the bodywork etc turning it from only a Swiss cheese shell into a work of art. we lost him when he was 95% finished, so my godmother sold his petroliana/automobilia/ antiques to finish the car in his honor. This car IS my godfather Marty, it will never be sold. He kept fantastic records of most of the parts and I plan to do the same but I appreciate the reminder I’ll have to add the valve covers, even though they are only temporary but it will remind me when the kids helped. Also, thank you for the tip regarding local libraries and their book sales. I will have to see if any of these local libraries and bookstores. I ordered the Pocket Ref on Amazon for $12, look forward to scanning over it!
