here are some pics of the progress so far on the hood scoop for my race truck. I am making it out of sheet metal and then I am going to make a mold to make the scoop out of gl*** and mold it to the hood. does it look ok or is it to tall or small or to big??? what do you think. Ron...
Thanks guys, I wish I had a HEMI for it. its getting a mild 440 mopar for now and I have a 493 stroker 440 for it later next year heres an engine shot with the motor plate we made up last weekend. Ron...
Just curious, why dont you flange the sheetmetal piece and bolt it on? you spent the time making the scoop from metal. If i were going to make a buck and splash a mold off it and then pull a gl*** scoop i think i would have just carved it from foam in a 10th the time. As far as the shape i personally would go with something a little softer to mimic the lines of the truck, the opening radius a bit softer but thats my two cents...... are you going to lay it up from mat, cloth or carbon?
I like it, but I agree that maybe it's a bit too squared off. Reminds me of an early 70s Ford scoop. Nice work, though! Hey, how about cutting a hole in the hood and fabricating a bottom half for that with a foam lip and making it into a full "shaker" style scoop to keep with the MoPar theme. Just a thought.
Nice job. i d make it out of gl*** myself. As you know Nothing sticks to gl*** but more gl***. Awesome job..
Just a random thought on the engine mounting plate: It looks to me like it may impede air flow to the engine. I'm (over?) thinking that air coming in the engine compartment could hit the plate and "bounce" back, slowing down the air flow overall. Not finding fault, just something you might want to consider. Maybe drilling some holes in the plate would alleviate any potential problem or at least lessen it. Just my 2¢
Thanks for the comments and ideas guys I plan to make it out of fibergl*** mat and make it part of the fibergl*** hood to add strength to the hood after I cut the hole in it, the hood will be lift off for now. I didn't have any foam(and not sure what kind to use) to make a plug, so I just welded it up with some sheet metal that I had around here. the shaker idea sounds pretty cool but I want to make the hood less flimsy and feel that the scoop mat and resined to the hood will keep it lite but add strength to it. I plan to round it off a little more with the fibergl*** scoop. I also plan to weld a flange to the bottom of this metal scoop and maybe use it on another project later I think the engine plate is trimmed back pretty good, if you look at it the top is not any wider than the heads or headers, and the bottom area is where the stock motor mounts would be. I'll see how it works and I could drill some holes in it later if its an issue, thanks for the concern and Idea THANKS again guys for the comments and ideas. Ron...
Hey Ron, the hood scoop looks really cool and I love the the motor plate. However, I'm agreeing with TagMan, but for a diffewrent reason! I think the plate would just be so much "cooler" if it had some holes in it - you know just for looks and because you could! By the bye, Speedway is selling NEW in the crate 5.7 hemis for $2995!!! Wow, I'm thinking of one for my '63 convertible. Awesome motors, for sure...
moparron426. IF the hood has structural issues and you are going to depend on the scoop to add some rigidity back to it i would use several layers of light weight cloth with each layer turned with the fiber orientation 45 deg this helps distribute a lot of the stress you may also want to add a layer of a sandwich core material like divinymat or nomex honeycomb you can also lay up on the inside of the hood some reinforcement areas with kevlar tape. I have done my fair share of gl*** work being a retired composite junkie for the aerospace industry if you need any help let me know.
oldandkrusty, I just might take yours and tagmans idea and do some holes in it to make it look cooler and it might help with airflow . and yes I did see the add for the speedway engines, we have one in my wife truck and it is fun and fast. I have plans to do one in my phaeton delivery when I get to it... baggedchevyss thanks for that info, the hood seams pretty strong right now but I was afraid if I cut a hole in it it might get to weak so adding the scoop would help make it stronger again, thanks for offer for help I may ask a few questions if I run into trouble.
