Hi, I have a customer with a 64-66 Chevy 283 motor with a 400 trans. The block has the straight pattern starter bolt setup...Anyone know what starter # will work with this setup?
Can you get a casting number off the block? Run the numbers to see what vehicle the engine originally came in. That may give you a direction to start looking.
It only has two holes, not three? The straight across setup is for the small flexplate type starter. The staggered holes are for the large flexplate type starter. If it only has the two holes, drilling and tapping the block is challenging...it's easier to swap in a TH350 converter and flexplate. But it's likely it has the holes for the other starter. Big 14" diameter 168 tooth flexplate fits the early powerglides and the TH500 with the large bolt pattern, as well as the smaller bolt pattern like the Th350 and later powerglides used. This is used with the staggered bolt starter, which uses two long bolts to hold it to the block. Small 12.5" 154 tooth flexplate fits the later powerglides and th350 with the smaller bolt pattern. This is used with the straight across bolt starter, which uses one long and one short bolt to hold it on.
