i'm wiring my 350 chevy motor, with a new harness. did the ignition switch, and starter the way it calls for. put a battery to the starter and when i turned the key to on it the starter made a klunk noise. when i turned the key to on not start. i quickly disconnected the jumpers. any ideas welcome. it is wired the way it calls for.
Jan You are thr only one who knows if it is wired according to the directions. Here is what you need a hot wiore to the ignition switch, the positive battery cable to the battery post on the started solenoid. and the ground to the block. A wire runs from the start post of the ignition switch to the start post of the starter solenoid. When you turn the switch to start the starter will whir.
starter post < pos. bat., lead to alt.,and i have my fan relay to it.> selinoid plug to center of ignition sw. < start > main red from fuse box to < bat.,> on sw. < ***c.,> to ***c. on sw .ign., to + on coil
Sounds like you might have a wire on the wrong post. Are touching at the connector. Look at the back switch and insure its correct. Then look at the starter be sure it's correct. Check the wire from the alternator to where you terminated it. Has to be simple.
That sounds about correct. When you try to start it what happens? Are you getting smoke or melting wires?
turned to start and klunk i disconnected the jumpers quickly. its a mini starter with one sel. lead. that i ran to the S on the ig. sw. i didn't connect the alt. wire yet to the alt. do u think the relay could have something to do with it?
Have you got the starter bolted on the block so that the pinion on the drive engages the ring gear and doesn't hit the flywheel in the wrong spot? That will sound rather like a silly question but with that style of starter it's entirely possible.
Check your ground wire. Neighbor took the starter off a O/T vehicle twice before he tracked it the ground post losing contact. Still had power to everything just not enough to engage starter.
If , big IF here--- it is indeed wired correctly - then there is a faulty or mismatched component/s someplace. If the starter makes noise in the "ON" position ; I'd be looking at the ignition switch. However I'd triple check the wiring first.
'31 vickey, your right. ignition sw. just replaced the NEW one i bought, and swaped it on another NEW one. works good. starter sounded like it was winding. could this be beause its a high capasity starter?
No, the battery cable itself carries the juice to the starter. The ignition switch has a network of small contacts inside of it. It sends power to different places depending on the position acc-off - on - start. Sometimes, new switches are bad in the box, sometimes they are bad because too much weight in keys has csused them to go bad ( actually sloppy). Sometimes they just have reached the end of their life expectancy.
